When I turn on my canon gl1 to play it says "remove the cassete" and then flashes EJECT. I was just filming with it the other day and didn't drop it or anything, anyone know what it could be?

"I recently had this problem on an XL1s. The error message indicates a tape loading or transport mechanism malfunction. The loading process involves at least two steps. First, there are the thin metal panels that hold the cassete in a specific alignment as it is lowered into record/playback position. These panels must move independently as the cassette is lowered/ejected. A very small coiled spring at the back of the panels provides the tension on the panels to hold the cassette in perfect alignment. You can see this spring (with the tape door open) if you look into the cassette compartment from the back of the camera. If this spring is gone or has come loose from the bottom pin the cassette can not properly load, and you will get the error message. If you have good eyes and a LOT of patience you might be able to re-connect the spring. It took me about an hour to re-connect my loose spring. Warning: Don't attempt this unless you have another intact camera to use as a guide. While you are looking around try and determine if any of these thin metal panels are bent. If so, a trip to Canon repair is essential. Indeed, any malfunction of the camera is reason for a visit to Canon.
Second, once the cassette has been loaded a complicated series of mechanical arm movements extract the tape and position it around the record/playback heads. Anything that obstructs or prevents the completion of this process will generate the same error message. Don't even consider a quick-fix/repair in this area. The parts are so tiny any poking around is certain to cause additional damage.

Finally, Contact Canon and get specific instructions for initiating the repair process. follow these to the letter. Most comments I have read about Canon repair say they get things done in a timely fashion. However, be prepared upon the camera's return to find some kind of behavior shift in the camera's operation. Virtually every comment I have read regarding factory camera maintenance makes note of this. It is never a crisis. Just a simple fact that the repair facility (any repair facility) can't make the product exactly the same as it was when it left the factory. I see this trait in all of my automobiles, for example.

Thanks, seems like a lot of work or expensive. Can I just feed the video footage directly to my computer or laptop by firewire or will that effect the quality>?
