if short domains worth so much then why a.com...
if short domains worth so much then why a.com, b.com, c.com....etc have nothing there?
Those names are "reserved" names and registered by "RESERVED-INTERNET ASSIGNED NUMBERS AUTHORITY" But clearly Paypal(x.com) and Nissan(z.com) worked something out. So it seems the names are reserved only if you have enough money; but nobody's stupid enough to pay for them. My theory is the names aren't worth shit and anyone forking over big bucks for a.com...etc would be a fool. Sex.com, gay.com...even spit.com is worth more than a.com because what the fuck would a.com stand for. I think paypal didn't get shit out of x.com and realized that paypal.com was a better name to build a brand. Branding is the key to great domains. Maybe I'm off-base here so if anyone has a really short domain(other than sex.com...) that they believe made it for them please shoot me down in this post. I'd like to hear your story. |

I agree... if the letters don't mean something they are worth nothing.

x.com would have been a great porn portal but I'm sure icann would not have sold it to a porn venue no matter what. |

All depends on your business plan and and your long-term goals. One is either building a brand around a URL or seeking a URL to enhance an existing brand. Clearly the Nissan Z [ z.com ] made sense for this high-end, high-profit automobile. AA.com serves American Airlines very well; I use it all the time. And this is particularly important to companies who are used to doing most of their advertising in print or on television or radio - z.com is a lot easier to remember...
Certainly the 'X' for paypal.com was a poor buying decision if they paid big for it, but maybe they were thinking "transactions" or something at the time... b.com would be a great URL for a business site or boob affiliate program...just have to use your imagination, and of course determine if the outlay is justified in terms of expected returns... |

"Such domains are rare, as on December 1, 1993, IANA explicitly reserved all single letter and single digit second-level domain names in the TLDs .com, .net, and .org. This was done in case the registries for these domains became overloaded." If that happened, one possible solution would have been to allow people to register domains under things like domain.a.com (compare: .co.uk), so these domains were reserved. Quote:

But, if they will be auctioned, yahoo.com wants y.com, overstock.com wants o.com, etc. And believe me, they'll happily pay top dollar to get those domains.
