What kind of house do you get for about $500,000 in your neighbourhood?

If you excludes condos, what do you get for about $500,0000?

In my area, Known as "McGill Ghetto", you'll get $500K a 2 storey plus basement row-housing unit such as this:

These type of houses have 4 bedrooms and sit on 1,500 square feet of land.

Prices here are all over the place because of "view lots". Put a 2000 square foot home on a lot w/o a view and you can buy it for $170K. Stick it on a small lake/creek - $300K. Give it a mountain view, $500K+. All on about 2/3 of an acre.

My house is 2300 sq ft but I'm on a small (7 acre) lake and I have almost 2 acres of land. I could get about $300K+ for it.

BUT, if I sold my lots separately and just sell the house, I could add another $60K or so when I sell ;)

A condo is a where everyone owns their own unit but share common areas (i.e. hall, elevator, etc.)...

A condo is an apartment that you own, rather than pay monthly rent.

3000sq ft living, over 4000 sq ft total on 2 acres. Sits 360 feet from the road, with a pool, hot tub, and pool house.

Way less than 500K. We bought this in the 300K range last month.

Yeah, except in some places (mostly NYC) they still call them apartments even if you own them.

..and apparently finland. I had no idea the same place had a different name depending whether you were a tenant or the owner. Doesn't in finland.
I figured a condo was sort of "row house/terraced home", got that from the dictionary.

There are different types of condos. A row house can also be held in condo if you share common areas, typically pay a monthly fee to take care of these areas, etc.

They also have "co-ops" in NYC. Something I still don't understand. I know they have to vote on letting people buy a place there though.

I pay a monthly fee of 258,80 euros per month on my apartment without a yard on these 'expenses' even though I own the place. Not including utilities.

My understanding is that it's the same thing as an apartment or condo, but not just anyone can buy it. (there's the voting thing)

In a way it's kind of cool, you can do background checks on your neighbors before they move in so you can keep the riff-raffs out.

Most of them are in the mulimillion dollar range though. Seems that kinda weeds out the "riff-raff" right there. But apparently they don't like certain kinds of rich folk

A co-op differs from a condo.

In a co-op, you own a percentage of the complex. You do not own your appartment per say.

In a Condo, you own your appartment, and pay condo fees for the common area.

Our house:

3300SF, 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths... would be 5000SF if the basement was finished. (They started that but didn't finish)

Our whole subdivision neighborhood is compiled of houses like ours. 3000 square or more, starting from the low $300's to around $375k in one of the nicest areas near Atlanta.

There's a high turnover rate, however. The owner of our house only lived here for a year before moving to another state, several of our neighbors have moved since we have been here only a few months and the one across the street just put their house up for sale a few weeks ago. We have the option to buy it, however, I'm not fond of the whole community setting. It's stuffy and prison-like. Even though you own your home, they always have a say in what you can and cannot do.

The cost of the house is very expensive, too.

Monthly
------------
Electric = $450+
Water = $200+ (you have to water your lawn a lot)
Gas = $200+

That's not including taxes, community fee, or insurance(s).

Where we just moved from in NY, you'd get land and the foundation, if you're lucky.

Both Napolean and I working and being at home the majority of the time makes the house more costly than people who leave the house to work, so I think that's a big chunk of the electric bill, other than the central air being on 24/7

You could get a large 6 bedroom with pool, maids quarters, and nice mountain view... Not quite mansion territory but very close.
