What kind of house do you get for about $500,000 in your neighbourhood?

If you excludes condos, what do you get for about $500,0000?

In my area, Known as "McGill Ghetto", you'll get $500K a 2 storey plus basement row-housing unit such as this:
http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/6...pri0101fh8.jpg
These type of houses have 4 bedrooms and sit on 1,500 square feet of land.

Jakke PNG 09-10-2006 09:34 AM

500k usd? You'd get 3 bedroom apartment if you're lucky. Probably 2 bedroom apartment. Houses start at 1mil+

US and Cnd dollar are pretty near one another:winkwink: Actually, the bedrooms in these houses are small, the average size of a bedroom is about 100 square feet and non have a private bathroom.

gangbangjoe 09-10-2006 09:41 AM

a hut...

ok not really but nothing really nice

Damian_Maxcash 09-10-2006 09:42 AM

2 bed apartment here as well.

wdsguy 09-10-2006 09:44 AM

I would probably be able to get a small shack.

bushwacker 09-10-2006 09:48 AM

in south fla...depending on the area, in decent area u will be able to get a 3/1 3/2 nothing fancy prob 1200-1500 sq. ft. In a realy good area, u wouldn't be able to buy anything for that.

You'd get about 130 square meter apartment with 500k usd/cad in my neighborhood.

Quickdraw 09-10-2006 09:52 AM

About 5k square feet here, plus a good chunk of land

By apartment, do u mean a condo?

baddog 09-10-2006 09:53 AM

you would get some chuckles

Peaches 09-10-2006 09:53 AM

Prices here are all over the place because of "view lots". Put a 2000 square foot home on a lot w/o a view and you can buy it for $170K. Stick it on a small lake/creek - $300K. Give it a mountain view, $500K+. All on about 2/3 of an acre.

My house is 2300 sq ft but I'm on a small (7 acre) lake and I have almost 2 acres of land. I could get about $300K+ for it.

Peaches 09-10-2006 09:54 AM

BUT, if I sold my lots separately and just sell the house, I could add another $60K or so when I sell ;)

noone is allowed to build there anymore...
when the house was built the city almost stopped everything because it was not "legal" in their eyes

but we won in court :)

so i think it is priceless to live here

Apartment, like an apartment on the 6th floor of an apartment building. Not sure what a condo is really.. But the shit I'm talking about does NOT have a yard of it's own.

VideoContentSource 09-10-2006 09:59 AM

Here in Marbella you will get a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment, A house will cost you araoubd 2 million.:thumbsup

Drake 09-10-2006 10:00 AM

A condo is a where everyone owns their own unit but share common areas (i.e. hall, elevator, etc.)...

A condo is an apartment that you own, rather than pay monthly rent.

Peaches 09-10-2006 10:07 AM

DAMN! Those are $1mil+ plus where I live w/o land and a view. In ATL, those would run about $1.5mil+ on 1/4 acre of land with your neighbor within spitting distance.

Doctor Dre 09-10-2006 10:22 AM

Yep. The #3 is riverside I think too...

RE is dirt cheap here.

3000sq ft living, over 4000 sq ft total on 2 acres. Sits 360 feet from the road, with a pool, hot tub, and pool house.

Way less than 500K. We bought this in the 300K range last month.

Yeah, except in some places (mostly NYC) they still call them apartments even if you own them.
Go figure.

cool1 09-10-2006 10:28 AM

In my neighbourhood you could probably buy 1/2 to 3/4 of the block.
from one cross street to the other.

..and apparently finland. I had no idea the same place had a different name depending whether you were a tenant or the owner. Doesn't in finland.
I figured a condo was sort of "row house/terraced home", got that from the dictionary. :)

There are different types of condos. A row house can also be held in condo if you share common areas, typically pay a monthly fee to take care of these areas, etc.

They also have "co-ops" in NYC. Something I still don't understand. I know they have to vote on letting people buy a place there though. :1orglaugh

Houses on Mont-Royal arent part of the Mcgill gettho.. ;)
And Id be surprise if a house this size on Mt-Royal would be even close to 500k.. :2 cents:

I pay a monthly fee of 258,80 euros per month on my apartment without a yard on these 'expenses' even though I own the place. Not including utilities.

My understanding is that it's the same thing as an apartment or condo, but not just anyone can buy it. (there's the voting thing)

In a way it's kind of cool, you can do background checks on your neighbors before they move in so you can keep the riff-raffs out.

McGill is part of Plateau borough.

Most of them are in the mulimillion dollar range though. Seems that kinda weeds out the "riff-raff" right there. But apparently they don't like certain kinds of rich folk :thumbsup

Scootermuze 09-10-2006 10:46 AM

I could probably buy my whole neighborhood for that amount.. :)

A co-op differs from a condo.

In a co-op, you own a percentage of the complex. You do not own your appartment per say.

In a Condo, you own your appartment, and pay condo fees for the common area.

Our house:
http://moopgroup.com/house/1.jpg
http://moopgroup.com/house/2.jpg
http://moopgroup.com/house/3.jpg
http://moopgroup.com/house/4.jpg

3300SF, 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths... would be 5000SF if the basement was finished. (They started that but didn't finish)

Our whole subdivision neighborhood is compiled of houses like ours. 3000 square or more, starting from the low $300's to around $375k in one of the nicest areas near Atlanta.

There's a high turnover rate, however. The owner of our house only lived here for a year before moving to another state, several of our neighbors have moved since we have been here only a few months and the one across the street just put their house up for sale a few weeks ago. We have the option to buy it, however, I'm not fond of the whole community setting. It's stuffy and prison-like. Even though you own your home, they always have a say in what you can and cannot do.

The cost of the house is very expensive, too.

Monthly
------------
Electric = $450+
Water = $200+ (you have to water your lawn a lot)
Gas = $200+

That's not including taxes, community fee, or insurance(s).

born4porn 09-10-2006 11:00 AM

$500k would not get you much at all here in Sydney!

something like this

Furious_Female 09-10-2006 11:02 AM

Where we just moved from in NY, you'd get land and the foundation, if you're lucky. :Oh crap

WTF. Is that house energy efficient?
The house looks nice tho.

Both Napolean and I working and being at home the majority of the time makes the house more costly than people who leave the house to work, so I think that's a big chunk of the electric bill, other than the central air being on 24/7 :1orglaugh

RayBonga 09-10-2006 11:15 AM

One of these

http://www.food4africa.org.za/dynami...ck-2%20big.jpg

fuzebox 09-10-2006 11:19 AM

You could get a large 6 bedroom with pool, maids quarters, and nice mountain view... Not quite mansion territory but very close.
