BestBuy 32" LCD TV ... Did I get a good deal ??

I just redid my bedroom (paint / doors / molding) and I wanted a flat panel TV for wall. I don't watch TV in there much at all so i just wanted something simple. I went to best buy and found this TV ..Not sure if Westinghouse is any good but for what i wanted i figured it was good enough.

I got the TV (on sale $950).. wall mount and 4 year warranty for about $1200. did I make a mistake going cheap or for what I'm using for is it good. I don't know much about TV's

Let me know before the guy comes at the end of the week to install it on the wall.

The only thing I don't understand is why such a small HDTV would have 1080i? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It looks like a pretty good deal w/built in DVD player, havn't seen very many larger HDTVs that have built in players for like the kids room or their play room, etc. I've only seen one other LCD TV lower than that and that was a 32" LCD TV for $699, did not have HDTV tuner built-in (was 'HD ready').

It looks like a pretty good deal to me but still, the 1080i thing is retarded.

*groans* Just noticed it doesn’t have HDMI or DVI, though that’s probably not a deal-killer for you, it would be for me.

The only review I could find on the internet :

Great Idea, but Poor Execution, June 13, 2006
Reviewer: KHK (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews
I first bought this TV as an open box item, because there were none in stock. I used it for two days and then it developed horizontal lines and a shadow effect in the picture. I took it back and bought another one, which had never been used. It has really bad color quality in the TV portion and a buzzing sound on one of the speakers. I plan to return it also. Too bad, because I love the operational ease of the DVD player - and not having to have an additional piece of equipment.

Yes thats a good deal for the size, but I would have paid a few more bucks to go with a brand with a history of quality. I guess since you went with the added warranty then everything should be fine assuming you like the picture quality.

Component inputs can display 1080i.

What Nocarrier said, but yeah it doesnt' have DVI or HDMI, and it doing 1080 on such a small screen is retarded anyways.

I'm aware of that, but the general consensus is that the clarity isn't as sharp with component vs hdmi. Just seems silly to make a 1080i unit and not give it hdmi output.

I guess I look at it differently with 1080i on a smaller screen, having that resolution makes it easier to see things normally lost from a distance on a smaller screen.

there are probably 5 or 6 more

brand name isnt all its cracked up to be in lcd's because none of them actually make the lcd's themselves, they get them all from the same suppliers

I work with HD screens about 4 hours each day, and until you get into the 51? arena there is simply no reason whatsoever to have 1080. It?s a waste of money really, both for consumers and prosumers and for the most part even the majority of professionals.

That's actually a decent deal because of the free shipping and you're right about a few manufacturers making them for many brands.

the one without the DVD built in was $799 so that looks about right ..this one has the DVD and the picture looked great in the store. I got the 4 year warranty for like an extra $120 so if i have any issues I can bring it back.

I'm betting this guy had a shit load of wires running around it and was getting interference .. it just happen to a buddy of mine (his lines ran next to a power line in the wall) and he put better shielded wires on it and it was fine after that. I guess time will tell...

Nice Mike. The thing is do you think you can survive for a while without HDMI? When I bought my HDTV the first thing I wanted to know was does this TV come with HDMI Inputs.

I need at least DVI for what I do. DVI is identical to HDMI quality-wise, the only difference being HDMI carries audio as well. He'll be fine without HDMI and DVI as long as you have component inputs, component will get you roughly identical quality. I hear that until 2k10, the ICT ain?t going to be fully implemented so he?ll be safe for now.

You're awfully confused for someone that "works" with them. No where does it say it has a resolution of 1080. It clearly states the maximum screen resolution is 1366x768. It is however capible of receiving an HD signal up to 1080i at which it will convert to it's native resolution.

Westinghouse does make 37" and 42" 1080P LCD's that have a native resolution of 1920x1080, and for $500 more he could have got the 37".

Higher resolutions do make a difference on smaller screens. If it's used as a normal TV only and viewing distances aren't that close you wont really see the differnce. But if the viewing distance is close such as if it's used as a monitor or for gaming the differnce and clarity is very noticeable even on the smaller screens.

I didn't read the whole thing, all I saw was 1080. I don't sit here and fucking read e-book equivalent text, as that is too close to being a real book, and books are for fags. Anyways...

I work with all different size screens from 19? to around 60? and I only tell a difference on the larger screens (51?+ arena) w/1080i. The 720p will still look marvelous, but I can see a definite visual difference at the 51? mark. That?s not to say 720p magically turns shitty at the 51? mark, far from it, but 1080i does look better at those sizes. Anything smaller than that I see it as being identical, and if 720p is cheaper to produce/buy (which seems to be the case), I see no reason for someone to spring for ?true? HD quality screens at 1080i unless they are getting a 51? screen, or bigger.

Of course if the 1080i is cheaper than the 720p, sure, spring for it. Notice though that if you bought a HDTV just for football, or extremely high paced action movies, you?d be better going off with 720p though (1080i does a poorer job than 720p when it comes to rapid movement). Even though 720p is poorer quality on the larger screens than 1080i, the newer Samsung screens with LED backlighting promise to help minimize the quality loss in this arena, and it?ll be interesting to see if it holds true. Samsung maintains that there is a 25-40% quality improvement? which is amazing considering it just uses a different backlight source!

Anyways, I?ll maintain that 1080i really starts to shine at around the 51? mark. Below that I really have not been able to see any difference between 1080i and 720p, other than with fast motion (action movies, football, etc.), and in that arena 720p kicks 1080i?s ass. So pick and choose based on what you are going to use the TV for, as well as price vs. performance. If you can get a great deal on a 1080i TV below the 51? mark, go for it (as long as you don?t mind it being subpar when it comes to fast-paced action). But then again if I were you, I wouldn?t listen to a guy who burns books and hates cats. He?s fucking crazy.

If you're seeing quality degrading at 1080 then it's more then likely the source material. Higher resolutions will bring out more of the defects in the source.

I remember the first time playing media files on a standard TV via a computer. I was awestruck at how 'good' it looked compared to a normal computer monitor where you can visibly see so many artifacts. I didn't quite understand at the time why that was... god damn that feels like ages ago.

Well I'm not really into TV/DVD combos. if the DVD fucks up you have to take the whole tv to get repaired. Not to mention you have a HDTV but the DVD is a standard DVD player not a HD one.

Also for $1000 I'd think you should get HDMI and 400 cd/m² brightness is really rather weak. Hope you plan on watching tv in total darkness.

For $100 less you could have gotten something like this. Though I can't vouch for this TV. Same contrast raito but 550 cd/m² and has HDMI.

Even though you may not use HDMI now, you will in the next 4 years with blue ray dvd players etc. Xbox 360? You might check out avsforum.com for some reviews. Higher contrast is better too, and I notice that the LCDs that are under $$1500 usually seem to have a ghosting affect or blurred text. I have a CRT HDTV because the picture is sharper for the price and I mostly game on it. This is just my opinion, I'm no expert.

And if it has one HDMI port you can later purchase a splitter if need be.

I have a CRT HDTV because the picture is sharper for the price and I mostly game on it. This is just my opinion, I'm no expert.
XBOX 360 doesn't support HMDI. Anyways I wouldn't mind going with a CRT HDTV until the prices come down and LCD and plasmas improve the technology, but they are hard to find the largest I can find locally is 30 inches which has the same height as a 24 inch standard TV. Too small for me.

For the 32" you should have paid a little more and got a Samsung, although it doesn't have a built in DVD. Much better LCD.

Yeah .. i looked at the Samsung (very nice TV) while i was there and i think it was like $1100 or $1200 .. without the DVD ( i wanted the DVD because it's going on bedroom wall and it's less wires to run in the wall) I could have gotten the same TV without the DVD for $750 ..

I got the TV (on sale $950).. wall mount and 4 year warranty for about $1200. did I make a mistake going cheap or for what I'm using for is it good. I don't know much about TV's

Let me know before the guy comes at the end of the week to install it on the wall.

Sweet TV. Got one similar quality/priced last month for my bedroom. For what you want (and I'm just guessing from knowing you) it's perfect, no reason to spend a fortune on anything more.

It's a nice set, and you will enjoy it...It's just nicer to watch for some reason and the HDTV channels come out awsome. I still cant decide what pixel setting I like better, the full screen (stretched a little, you get used to it quick) or square for non-widescreen shows. but I enjoy it thoroughly. Something tells me you will to.
