A lot of the gas savings comes from regenerative braking and you brake a lot more in the city.

Yep. Why do you want an SUV that can't go offroad though? If all you want is 5 seats and a trunk, go get a car.

When you are someone like me that needs just a bit more space than any car offers. A SUV usually has.

Not to go on about this, but the standard 5 series actually has more trunk space than the X5. The 3 series has more than the X3, and so on.

Only space benefit SUV's have is when you drop the rear seats down, and it's only recently that they started doing that.

Make no mistake about it. The money you save on gas You'll have to spend 10 times in service and maintenance cost of a Hybrid.

I have one of these so hopefully I can shed some light.

I'm still breaking it in so the gas mileage isn't quite that high yet, but it's definately close. The huge benefit of the hybrid comes when you are traveling under 40MPH, because that's when the electric batteries are running the car. I get about 600km (370mi) to a tank right now if I drive smart. But it should go up as the vehicle gets broken in more.

Also it's tough to judge wether the savings on gas will be worth it. I wasn't really trying to justify the extra cost as saving gas when I got it. Overall people say the Lexus 400h drives MUCH better than the sluggish 350. The 400h is quite fast actually.

I would lease it if I were you though, buying the hybrid doesn't seem like a good choice right now since it is such a new technology. The car will depreciate way too much as new hybrid technology comes out. And, of course, you'll have higher maintenance later on when the warranty runs out.

So pretty much just make sure you have a good warraty package for the time you plan to have the vehicle, and you should be fine. As mentioned before though, Lexus is the most reliable luxury car maker.

I think most of these hybrids are just feel good marketing gimmicks.

If I remember correctly it would take roughly 8 years of average driving to recoup the extra cash you pay up front for a hybrid.
