Anyone do a lot of video capture, dvd ripping or high quality video editing?

then i got some questions for you.

whats the best capture card and software to use?
which dvd ripping software is good?
whats the best software to edit videos? i'm assuming premiere, but are there better choices out there?

if you answer these questions i'll give you a cookie.

I don't know what the best capture card is, but I have been using this thing called Dazzle. It plugs in through USB, and the quality seems to be pretty good; but I'm capping from VHS so the qaulity isn't the best to begin with.

For video editing, premiere is the way to go.
If your cutting up one large video into smaller videos I've found that Windows Movie Maker makes it easy as hell.

Hope that helps..

Now wheres my damn cookie

If you are planning on doing alot of video I suggest getting Matrox RT2500. Its up there in the price range but its an unbelivable card. Matrox has its own capture software that you can use which is more powerful then Premieres capture software....

i don't normally post on this subject, but what the hell.

you should be using firewire (IEEE 1394) to import your video. usb is a joke. if you are shooting the video, you should be shooting with a good minidv camera. if you are buy video shot by someone else, get the video in minidv format, and import via firewire. editing: premiere is good. final cut pro is great, but expensive - and it's mac only (bite me if you don't like mac - fcp kicks ass for video, and no 'card' is required with the mac). compression - cleaner 5.

I have used Pinnacle Systems DV500 plus card for capturing video from VHS and DV cameras... Works pretty well.

Use premiere 6 for editing.

DVD ripping, I have not idea.

I use the ATI products. They offer more output sizes then other cards I have seen. They arent high powered or high priced like the Matrox products. Keep in mind Matrox has its applications but its better for high end work, not little video clips on the web.

I make mpegs from DVDs I own the rights to. Its 10x faster than capturing and the quality is 10x better too. Unless your DVD is made by a major motion picture company you probably do not need to rip it. All you need to do is drag the vob files from the DVD to your hard drive. Once thats done you need a vob editor. Look around google.. youll find a few free ones. You can use DVD2AVI and even get crafty using frame serving to automate the video editing process. I think there is also a DVD2MPG utility.

As far as editing goes I found a program at http://www.softlab-nsk.com/ddclipro/index.html ... I liked the way it works alot. Theres also MGI Video Wave and Ulead makes a video editor. All three have free trial downloads on the web.

Good luck

I use all freeware programs to make mpegs from DVDs, check out digital-digest.com for help and a list of good freeware programs. I drag the vobs to my hard drive, cut them into smaller pieces with a program called Vob Splitter, then I take them into a vob-2-avi program, then into virtual dub. Then I use Tmpgenc to encode them to mpeg-1.

I also shoot with a GL-1 with IE1394 using Premiere and Cleaner 5 - it's the only way to go..

Dawg, that's a real clean site you've got there.. I like it.
