-   -   Is $850 too expensive to pay for a cat? (https://gfy.com/showthread.php?t=649175)

MandyBlake 08-28-2006 05:23 PM

why does she want/need a purebred cat?
save a kitty's life!!!

selena 08-28-2006 05:39 PM

A good way to see if it is too expensive is a method I use on my sons.

Say a cat from the pound would cost $75. Tell her you will pay $75 toward the $850 cat, and she'll have to pay the rest if it means that much to her.

Odds are, the cat will suddenly cost too much money.

I had a Bengal. I paid about $800 or so for her. incredble cat.

notabook 08-28-2006 05:42 PM

How about using that $850 bucks and putting it to good use instead, such as buying a couple of good rifles to snipe cats with? We are running out of time to deal with the feline menace, do what you can to ensure the survival of the human race!

Harsh, but yeah. With so many cats in shelters, she should go have a look, and see if any win her over. She might be surprised...

I can't believe how many people here talk out of their asses.

Animals from the SPCA or other sheltered are taken care of and tested and I believe always spayed or neutered before adoption. I'm pretty sure they always have all of their required shots as well, especially rabies.

Just because you spend over $500 on a pet does not make it any better then a pet you get for free.

I'd bet that the majority of the time animals that are given away for free are taken better care of. One reason is that the person giving them away would rather see it in a good home then have a few dollars in their pocket. All of my cats have been purchased from animal shelters or rescue places for under $75 and were spayed/neutered (if old enough) and current on shots.

As far as dogs, from my own experience and that of my friends the more they paid, the more problems. Especially breeders of dogs such as pitbulls. Usually the people are nothing but white trash trying to make money and care
nothing about the animals.

blah, blah blah... my ex g/f wanted a kitten once, went to the shelter and picked out the cutest little one... came home one night it was face down in the litter box not moving, barely alive, very fragile since day 1, vet said some disease the shelter never took the time to see. died in her hands barely purring at about 5am less than 2 weeks later after we took her home

BTW many people that are allergic to cats, are NOT allergic to my silver bengal. people see the cat and say oh im allergic, then 2 hours later they say hmm this cat is cool

I was thinking the same thing :disgust

looks too much for me...
i wouldn't spend such money on a cat.

Snake Doctor 08-29-2006 12:19 AM

Hey Detoxed....STFU

Just because you had one bad experience adopting a cat doesn't mean that everyone else in the world needs to go buy an expensive purebred cat.
You're the exception not the rule.

Snake Doctor 08-29-2006 12:23 AM

Here's my cat story.

I was never really a cat person, or even an animal person for that matter.
Then I started dating a girl that had a purebred white persian cat. We lived together for awhile and I really loved that cat, he kind of grew on me.

Her and I parted ways a long time ago, but now I have 4 cats in the house. Two that were adopted from shelters and two that were strays that we brought in.
No difference whatsoever between these 4 and the purebred persian (other than appearance)
They're just as healthy, happy, quirky, and funny as any other cats you'll come across.

If you want a cat go rescue one that will otherwise be euthanized instead of overpaying for some show cat that will find a good home regardless.
:2 cents:

$850 for cat ? im not so crazy.... :)

bausch 08-29-2006 03:14 AM

I wouldn't spend $850 on a cat but I would spend $850 on a pair of shoes.

I guess it just depends on what's important to you.

I personally don't like cats. I wouldn't take one for free.

Taass 08-29-2006 03:34 AM

Well.. you often get what you pay for :2 cents:

Nothing wrong in getting a cat from the shelter if you "just want a cat" but if you want a purebreed then that just isn't the place to look imo :)

Platinumpimp 08-29-2006 03:49 AM

I don't understand the people jumping on bu((aneer here. You guys are telling him and his girlfriend, go pick one up from a shelter...but isn't that his decision? Are you guys really that perfect and donate $1000 each month to Africa for instance?

If she wants a pure bred, let them be. The $850 is only money, what you get in return when you treat them well, is priceless.

Quagmire 08-29-2006 05:00 AM

I get free cats for the barn and we generally lose 1 or 2 a year to coyotes. I wouldn't pay a dime for a cat.

And just tell her it is a pure bread.

TurboAngel 08-29-2006 07:10 AM
