Two fighter planes force Northwest flight to return to Amsterdam

so the BBC is reporting as breaking news. I haven't seen the story elsewhere. They are reporting people being removed from the plane when it landed back in Amsterdam.

Reuters has a tiny story:

US plane turned back to Dutch airport: report

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Two fighter planes have turned back an aircraft belonging to U.S. airline Northwest and accompanied it to Amsterdam's Schiphol airport, Dutch news agency ANP reported on Wednesday.

It quoted a police spokesman as saying a number of people had been taken off the plane but gave no further details. Neither Schiphol airport nor Dutch police were available to comment.

The Associated Press reports Dutch F-16s escorted a Northwest Airlines flight bound for India back to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport and that authorities later detained several passengers for questioning, an airport spokeswoman said.

They just wanted to chat to some passengers on the way to India

From Associated Press---

Quote:
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- Dutch F-16s escorted a Northwest Airlines flight bound for India back to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on Wednesday, and authorities later detained several passengers for questioning, an airport spokeswoman said.

Spokeswoman Mirjam Snoerwang said she had no further details on the reason for the incident, but the passengers had been escorted from the plane by customs police after the plane landed safely.

"A number of suspects were taken off the plane -- I don't know how many. They're undergoing questioning now," Snoerwang said.

The Dutch broadcaster NOS said the office of the National Terrorism Coordinator had been informed, but there was no immediate reason to impose extra security measures.

The coordinator's office could not immediately be reached for comment.

How is it any less worth posting than most other threads posted this morning? Sometimes the panic is the story too.

You haven't seen what's being posted on GFY lately, have you? Compared to most crap on here, this is as postworthy as it can be.

You know what they should do is have everyone that is going to fly do a pre flight ( like days or weeks before) sign in of some sort. Like if you pre submit for a background check or something as an opt in. Those that do the pre submit and verify they are not involved in anything shady get a special card with like fingerprint id on it, and make it have a untamperable chip on it. Any passenger that has that card gets sped along through customs and security. You couldnt force it of course, but for those that know they are doing nothing wrong could have like a quick pass. Im sure some people would say that would be giving up freedom of privacy, but frankly those with nothing to hide would rather do that then waste time every trip. Make the card good for 2 years or something. Innocent people would line up to do it for sure.

Fuck terrorism..... bet it was a couple of wacky dutchmen lighting up a cigarette in the back - a far more serious offence than carrying bomb components....

How is that dumb? You would still have to go through security as normal. I know I would have no problem with a background check. The only ones that would have a problem would be those with something to hide imo.

Because anything like that would make "clean" people easy targets for recruitment and when that happens you can kiss the whole security buh-bye.

When I read the thread title the first time, and before I looked at the article that the plane had been forced to "return" to Amsterdam, I figured some GFYer was just trying to have the flight diverted so that he could catch the Amsterdam webmaster's show, hehe.
