''They're locked up in jail for something that they didn't do,'' 20-year-old Lina Odeh said Saturday.

Her husband, Louai Abdelhamied Othman of Mesquite, along with his brother, Adham Abdelhamid Othman of Dallas, and their cousin Maruan Awad Muhareb of Mesquite, are charged with collecting or providing materials for terrorist acts and surveillance of a vulnerable target for terrorist purposes.

Police found about 1,000 cell phones in the men's minivan. Authorities have not said what they think the men intended to do with the phones, most of which were prepaid TracFones.

But the police chief in Caro, Mich., where they were arrested, said cell phones can be used as detonators.

Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark Reene told the Saginaw News in Michigan that investigators think the men were targeting the Mackinac Bridge, which connects Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas. He declined to say what led investigators to that belief.

Odeh said the men were buying the phones to sell to a man in Dallas for a profit of about $5 per phone. She said they were in Michigan because so many people in the Dallas area are doing the same thing that the phones are often sold out. Odeh said she thought her husband and relatives were targeted because of their Arab descent.

The men were arrested Friday afternoon. No pleas were entered at the arraignment Saturday. Bond was set at $750,000 apiece and the men were being held at the Tuscola County Jail, police said.

I find this a bit of a coincidence that these recent "busts" happen just around mid-term elections. Thanks to a toothless walmart employee, and within the power of the Patriot Act, (giving cops the power to do whatever the fuck they want in the name of "terrorism") 3 guys were arrested as possible terrorists. With absolutely no evidence of terror other than some cell phones. The FBI already questioned these guys, and found nothing to be worried about... Something is up... what do you think?

The Patriot act has put a lot more innoncet peole in jail than they have terrorists. in fact the Patric Act has not caught ONE terrorist or prevented ONE terrorist attack.

I think it's a little early to say exactly what happened regarding those 1000 cell phones. The truth will come out (hopefully).

apparently they were looking to buy and sell a bridge for profit as well. but at least we have their wife's objective opinion and legal analysis. why would anyone need anything else?

Enacting it was abuse enough. It is an unconstitional law that tells the government its OK to do unconsitutional things. No further proof is nessicary.

you can't get .05 per aluminum can... its sold by weight. and i seriously doubt you can find any type of weak and twisted math thats going to show that joe blow can drive a significant distance, somehow collect a significant weight in aluminum cans and make money on it.

i have lived here for 36 years and I haven't. i have seen someone return bottles maybe 2-3 times in my life. i am aware whats printed on cans and bottles... that doesn't mean you can correctly extrapolate that scrap of text on a can thats been there for 100 years, to create some sort of weird delusion of an interstate aluminum can recycling business.

although we are all proud of the fact that you can apparently read the can, as any of your posts suggest, you still have quite a ways to go in the areas of reasoning and logic.
