Miami Vice - 4 out of 10

I went last night with an open mind and found this movie quite boring and lacking something.

It was ok, i am glad i went, but it is not a movie that i would go and see again, i also found some of the actors could not talk properly.

All in all, i think they could have done a better job of this movie with the show being such a classic.

it was a terrible movie. i guess there are also two ways to look at it... if you are old enough to remember the series and watched it all the time and expected the movie to be related to the series... its not which is dissapointing. but even as a movie it was poorly done in almost every way, shape and form.

it caused me to think a little about what elements made the series successful (in my mind) and this movie had none of them.

colin farrel was probably the worst choice ever.

for me, it was weird. they took Alexander... the irish guy wiht the accent and dressed him up like a miami pimp. he had few speaking parts more than one line i suspect because of his accent. this was part of what destroyed it as a reflection of the series. The character in the series had an attitude that can't come across when the character doesn't speak. also, all the other touches... he had the cool ferrari back when few even knew what a daytona spider was.. the boat, the aligator etc etc... there was a whole package there, that the character in the movie didn't have. its that whole package that shapes the character and causes you to like him.

the rest of the crew was absent in the movie that was in the series... the serious/mysterious boss (olmos), the other police (they were there... but there was nothing special about them), izzy etc etc etc.... all these things that gave the series its own unique flavor and style... not to mention the music of the serious which was also very unique for the time.

if you watched the series, the movie leaves you sitting there the whole time asking "uhmm... wait a second, is that supposed to be...."

the movie was just a couple guys running around on a boat, shooting at shit.

it wasn't real believable to me that he got with the hardcore, "i'd rather kill you before i'll say good morning to you" japanese chick and broke her down in an afternoon and got her to fall in love with him as an integral part of the plot to "infiltrate" the most successful drug empire on the planet. it was just real phony and rushed.

it was weird that they went to have lunch in cuba. i was sitting there thinking "what the fuck... can this really happen"

i could go on and on forever.

it was worth watching... but it was a terrible dissapointment if its going to be compared to a series which was way ahead of its time, had a very unique style/flavor that was totally absent in the movie and a unique cast of characters which were absent from the movie

aryan nations guys running a highly sophisticated drug operation? a bunch of inbred trailer trash... with sophisticated weapons, surveillence, intel capabilities getting the respect of the worlds largest drug smuggling operations? had moles inside the FBI, feeding them information adn intelligence? didn't buy that either.

... and the worst part of the whole thing is that when it ends and you are sitting there asking yourself "what the hell just happened - that was nothing like the series at all and was only an average movie at best" - it fades to a huge miami vice logo. almost like some weird inside joke where only the producers/writers got it.

:2cents

My overall take is that I thought that colin and jamie were a little iffy...but I liked the storyline, I liked the style of filming, and I liked the bad guys.

I thought after leaving the theatre...even those who are being so critical would have to atleast appreciate:

1) How real the filming style made it feel at times (kinda like collateral)
2) The cars/boats sequences
3) Gun fight sequence

I feel that you atleast gotta give it a 5/10 for those things alone. If you were crazy about the filming style like me then that pushes it up to a 7 and if you liked the storyline and vilans like me then you got a 9/10.

My
