OK.. Can tell you of someone I know who did exactly that.

While the US was busy doing a "shock and awe", a friend was travelling over the desert to Bagdad - he's a war photographer and has been since Vietnam.

He was not "embedded" with troops and never ever has been - for the simple reason he wants freedom to operate. He was well treated by all Iraqi people he encountered and made a habit of "living in" with them to get his photo material.
