Actually,if you want a pretty accurate , real time depiction of what happened, see "United 93"...

It shows what happened from both a military and air traffic control point of view. We were really caught with our panties down, and simply could not react to the situation fast enough..

Apparently though your military IS in the business of and quite exceedingly prepared to defend the country from UA, American, and every other rinky-tink airline out there; there are very specific protocols to follow when any sort of weirdness happens out there in the blue heavens.
