A Little SEO Help, Please...
I have a simple mainstream website that Google is being a bitch about. I dont want to mention it here for fear that Google will see it and brand it as being adult.
Its a simple, one page site that has approx 2000 words of content. The site encourages people to send those prepaid credit card mailers back to the credit card companies in thier postage paid enevelopes. It has been online since 2004 and I have never put any time into it beyond intial creation. It averages 114 hits per day and makes me about $4.00 per day off Google AdSense clicks. Note that that $4 comes from an average of 2 clicks per day, so these are decent paying clicks. A little more traffic could make this thing turn some coin. I recently wikified the site to work with a CMS that I am developing in house. The CMS is basically an editor, it does NOT create a dynamic page, rather it rewrites a static page based on my edits. Google has always shown the side in the index and crawled both of its pages (the main page and the linked PDF file from that page) ever since the site went online. When I released the wikified version which included a slightly redesigned site with a complete re-write of the text, Google picked it up within 48 hours, so thats good. So here is the Google being a bitch part: This site is linked to from about 10 of my other sites which are also all listed in Google. Google has crawled and indexed those sites including the links pages on all but one of the sites. However, when I go to the site in question and put the URL into Google and say "Show sites that link to or mention" the site in question, it says "xxx did not find any documents". I know the crawler is seeing the links and I know that they are out there, but it continues to show this paticular site as having nothing other than itself pointing at it. This, of course, means low page rank and little to no traffic. Most of my traffic comes from Word of Mouth and various BBS/Usenet posts. Anyone got some ideas on how to make Googlebot see the light? |

Are the sites you are linking from having ANYTHING to do with credit cards? If not then Google might not associate them and figure they are not relevant.

Sue them too. You will no doubt be successful. Once you get your judgement, have the sheriffs seize their Googlebot.

matt cutts has said countless times that the link: tool only shows a sampling of your inbound links and is not to be used for anything important.
go to yahoo and do linkdomain:yourdomain.com. they show every link they counter.

Also Matt Cutts has said that inbound links cannot harm your site (your comment about being branded adult), because this would be an obvious way to attack competition.

I won't get into that debate further thtough as arguing with people that believe everything they read on blogs and SEO boards has always been futile.

If that was directed at me, stop assuming. It's common sense, how can inbound links negatively affect your site? If I wanted to take out a competitor, I'd just start throwing him on link farms.

A "simple, one page" web site isn't likely to rank well - at least not-long term. Google's algo likes quality and too many spammy sites are 1-pagers.
As a first step I'd try adding a few pages to your site in a clean, structured format. There are plenty of resources on the best way to do this, read them. |
