some great ones mentioned, but one I feel is under appreciated is Michaelangelo from Nitro

Huskie 08-03-2006 09:46 AM

The best in the world has probably never been famous, probably some kid in his room, my guess is some Mexican kid.

I also can't say who the best famous player is, but I can say that from my experience of guitar players Santana plays with more soul than almost anyone I have seen, he may not be the quickest or the best technical player, but the sound he can create is really quite amazing since majority of it is made up on the spot.

For pure Guitar pleasure I gotta go with Joe Satriani. Lots of people can play, he composes and plays every instrument. Including the incredible guitar licks that are comparable only to a Horny Angel! (Sorry bad Meatloaf reference!)

Huskie 08-03-2006 10:00 AM

I really need to check out Joe Satriani, that sthe one name I have heard of consistently for years and am ashamed to say I have never heard his work :)

Other axe men of note:

Rik Emmet (of Triumph)
Tom Scholtz (Boston)
Peter Frampton (Frampton comes alive!)
Neal Schon (Journey)

Just to throw in some names people perhaps haven't checked out, from various different styles:

Jimmy Bryant
Charlie Hunter
Phil DeGruy
Lenny Breau
Kevin Eubanks (see him live somewhere other than the 'Tonight Show'... his standing gig and various recordings don't really do him justice)
Bill Frisell
Henry Kaiser
Fred Frith
Guy Van Duser

A couple of the above are kind of tough to find recordings by, but well worth the search.

I love Zappa the most.. listened to soooooo many guitarist, but somehow i get moved by Zappa's sound most..not all his music is great but he has many utter brilliant tracks with incredible guitar solo's.

Btw, Stevie Vai played in Zappa's band ;-)

Best drummer? Terry Bozio in Baby Snakes..

Try Surfing with the Alien probably his most best and famous stuff.. think he has always been friends with and even tutored Kirk Hammet Steve Vai etc...Vai was great on eat em n smile/skyscraper etc. I have been adicted to Yngwie J Malmsteen for as long as I can remember..serious freak. But its just gotta be Ralph Macchio FTW..his work in crossraods...well legendary.:1orglaugh (Ry Cooder?)

Oh forgot...Zappa is/was in a world of his own for sure, but how bout Dweezil Zappa?/...he had mad chops...that solo he did with his dad on Sharleena was something else, defined 80's rock guitar for mind.....man I so wish my name was Dweezil, chicks would dig on me.

Yeah, Joe Pass kicked ass, for sure.

Bummer of a Joe Pass story: Once, years ago, I had tickets to see him as part of a concert that also featured Leo Kottke and a classical guitarist (whose name escapes me at the moment).

We get to our seats, and right before the lights dim, they announce "We regret to inform you that Mr. Pass will not be performing tonight, as he has fallen ill."

I think he died a week or two after that, without ever taking the stage again, if memory serves me correctly.
