Internet conenction problem(HELP)

My buddy just dropped his laotop off to me to see if i can Fix it. The last resort is to format and reinstall windows on it.

He can get online using IE without a problem but none of the messanger programs are connecting. Yahoo, MSN, and PalTalk all wont connect for some reason. anyone have anything I can try before i Format it.

go into control panel pete, (programs > control panel)
there you ewill find windows firewall or 'security'
one or either.. click on firewall if you have it and click on allowed connections or something like that and then there ya go
ports get blocked frequesntly when using Norton AV, just follow those steps..

My guess is that it is spy/malware that has the ports blocked. What kid of scanners do you have for that? I can see what I have here if you need one... hit me up if you do.
