There's a lot of new stuff happening in the medical research field that looks promising.

I'd say we have another decade to go before they really can nail cancer cells using nanotechnology type treatments.

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. From a total of 58 million deaths worldwide in 2005, cancer accounts for 7.6 million (or 13%) of all deaths. The main types of cancer leading to overall cancer mortality are:

* lung (1.3 million deaths/year);
* Stomach (almost 1 million deaths/year);
* Liver (662,000 deaths/year);
* Colon (655,000 deaths/year) and
* Breast (502,000 deaths/year).
Very scary.

Its fucking criminal that this country and others still allow people to consume tobacco products. One of the primary leading causes of cancer.

500,000 people die from smoking every year just in the USA alone. That's 10,000 people a week.

What a total sin that is.

But so many merchants, growers, and state and federal governments make a fortune off of it, they don't care if people drop while they make tons of money.

Utterly discraceful . . . .

The scary thing with Lung Cancer (The #1 killer) is that once you are diagnosed you have less than a 40% chance of living to 5 years after diagnosis. How do you cope with something like that? Knowing your days are that numbered.

Some Cancers, if detected early enough, can be wiped out but Lung Cancer - once you get it, you're dead. That's a hard pill to swallow.

My mother had Breast Cancer. She lived about 4 years after diagnosis. At one point, the cancerous region was the size of a baseball. After a year after that it was down to the size of a pea. God rest her soul, she told us the Cancer was in recess when in fact it was growing again after that and the doctor told her there was nothing else they could do. She had a stroke a few weeks later.

Unfortunatly at the time I was young and didn't quite grasp the concept of death - like, really grasp it and realize that it could and would happen to my mother.

Wow... happy day.

i just found out on the 8th that my mother has malignent melanoma on both lungs and her liver. it isn't curable but she is in chemo to shrink it.

i always thought other people and their families got cancer. stupid way to think, i know but nonetheless.

i didn't talk to my mother for 13 years prior to learning about this. i can say it has been a smack back to reality.

cancer- what can you do but take it one day at a time right?

mom had the same thing - liver cancer - even though she had maybe one drink a year - died almost two years ago - man time flies -

just make sure to spend as much time as you can with her - put the past aside and enjoy it while you can.

yes indeed very sad, cancer truly sucks for sure, can't believe they haven't found a cure for it yet, I bet they do just don't let the public know about it, only people like the Queen or Bill Gates have access to the cure prolly!

I've never used a tobacco product in my life, but I strongly disagree with you.

I have every right to spend my hard earned money on products to kill myself. The government is not here to babysit me.

Yes, it sucks. My mother, 2 aunts, and an uncle died from cancer. I am optimistic though. Maybe within 30 years, we'll see most of the common types of cancer cured.
