Is this a good deal?
Hi guys...
I'm in the process of getting a new machine for my video editing, etc... and was checking out Dell. I've been trying to negotiate for 2 days with the lady and here's where I am. I'm ready to buy and personally consider this a good deal, but I'm pretty naive when it comes to this sort of thing so if I'm being taken... please let me know. Dell Dimension 4500s 1.7 Gig Celeron Processor 512k Ram 80 Gig HD Floppy Video Ready CD & DVD Burner Combo Windows XP Home Edition Delivered - $1444.78 My main reason to use this machine is to edit video and now make DVD's (never did it before). Anyone have any thoughts on this matter? thanks in advance. - PornAddict |

Also, make sure that the hard drive is 7,200 RPM not 5,400 RPM

Dell is the BEST in my opinion, I've got over 30k in gear from them. I'd recommend not going with Celeron as noted earlier. If it's for video editing make sure you have at least 512mb of ram, possibly 1 gig. Another good option if you could affort it would be SCSI drives.
One of the best kept secrets would be: http://outlet.dell.com http://outlet.us.dell.com/Dispatcher... XXA&tgtSeg=B or http://outlet.us.dell.com/Dispatcher... XXA&tgtSeg=B I don't recommend getting a Dimension. Instead, go with their business-class Optiplex or Precision systems. Dell refurb systems come with a same as new warranty. Happy shopping! Check out the links above. Brad

Thanks for all the feedback, links, etc... that you all posted for me. You obviously saved me from making a mistake. I'm now going to be looking into the refurbished machines and the P4 processor.
Again... thanks for all the feedback! - PornAddict |

Bueno! I was looking at the Dell site and there were multiple p4's with 512-1024mb of RAM... big HD's, CDRW's... all for less than $1500

Go generic, you'll get 2x the machine for the same price. Fuck name brands, it's all made in the same factories.

The speed of the processor doesn't make that much of a difference, the speed of the drive will.
Get a SCSI drive and lots of RAM, it'll be worth it. |
