Hey Wanton

I'm using 3 lights for today's shoot and loving the results. I think I'll start using 3 every time. Damn!

3 lights are better than two...and they're even better than one. And way better than none.

What kinda set up do you use with 3 lights? I normally use 2 and set them at a 45 degree angle (or something similar) to the model. I do have 3 lights and have been wanting to use the 3rd but just never knew where to place it for the best results.

Today I'm doing something like this:

----------M----------

L1-------L2-------L3

(had to put the dashes there so the spacing stayed like I wanted it to stay)

Light 2 is set up high, sorta like a hair light. Lights 1 and 3 are at about shoulder level to the model when she's standing up.

I normally use 2 lights. I think three will be what I do from now on.

M= model
L1, L2, L3 = light 1, light 2, light 3

And you make it look fantastic! I could never get the results you get with 1 light no matter how many I used.

The two best photographers on this board are Brian (Wanton) and Dean.

Try placing a light back towards the back wall, up high - it can act as a back fill, and give nice hair effects as well, plus the bounce from the back wall will provide extra light.

I've been getting some good results with this...the key light heavily diffused in front, and a high 45º secondary front fill light. Make sure the model faces towards the 45º light if she is turned sideways (even better if you have a 4th light, set up at 45º on the other side - this works especially good for video).

I use a key and backcross that also functions as sidefill and bg . . that's about it . . . or just 1 key to fill to ambient . . same with video . . I lite sisters and couples differently . . my training is 'sitcomes and 'game shows' as well as news so I have some different working concepts that some photographers might not have access to . . I've had endless confabulation with dean capture about this . . not really sure if he got anything from this 'technical intercourse' . . very seldom do I use the 'butterfly' configuration that is mentioned here . ..
