I'm going out to buy memory upgrade.. How do I find out what kind, without actually removing the stick from the bus.

download aida 32, install it and start it.
change to: memory settings-> memory brand voila... all the details you need (even more)

When you open it up to take the ram out you'll be able to find the number on the mother board and then find out what kind of ram it will take
