New Scientist, 2003: "People who keep guns at home have a 72% greater chance of being killed by firearms and are 3.44 times more likely to commit suicide than those who do not keep guns at home..."

"Among 26 industrialized nations, 86% of gun deaths among children under age 15 occurred in the United States."

Although assault rifles get the highest-profile publicity, handguns are the biggest menace. They only account for one-third the number of guns estimated to be in circulation, but for more than two-thirds of gun-related deaths. And the handguns people keep at home "to defend against intruders" are 22 times more likely to be used in a homicide, suicide or unintentional shooting than to be used in self-defense.

Real hunters who don't slaughter game with assault weapons apart, guns are about dick-swinging. People can have them and once someone has one, someone else has to have one that is newer, more powerful, more expensive, or whatever. The rationalisations are bullsh*t so that the guy talking doesn't come across as an immature, insecure assh*le.

And if the day ever comes that we get a government against which we might need weapons for self defense, guess which part of the Constitution it will repeal first...

Got exactly that advice from a US law (firearms) person - more chance of having your own gun used on you (unless ya happen to be some firearms expert and a master of martial arts)

Tho.. there are other sensible precautions which hardly allow any attacker to even get the chance of using a weapon and that is *much* more fun

I love how other countries have this mentality that we all carry guns, and this makes us all crazy insane murderers. I don't know how else to explain this to people, but you shouldn't be worried about the level headed lawbiding citizens who own guns. It's the criminals with guns you need to worry about. And just so you know, criminals don't normally buy guns legally.

People own guns for many many reasons. Protection, hunting, shooting, collecting, etc. I personally bought mine because I went with a friend to the range one time and got hooked. It is so much fun shooting a gun and trying to master the art and become a skilled shooter.

So let me ask you this, why does it bother you so much? You don't see me being an ignorant jackass starting threads like "hey you asian people, what the fuck is up with the bonsai tree, get a real hobby weirdos" Also, Why didn't you mention bow huting and bow owners? They're just as dangerous. And don't give me any bullshit stats about murder rates with guns. Because I'm pretty tired of being lumped up into firearm statistics with criminals.

Anyway, why do they have so many guns there? I heard something like 1 gun every 3 families somewhere. It's insane! In other normal countries you maybe have 1 gun every 20 families..

Also, is it true that in some banks they give you a weapon if you open a bank account? WTF?

Is "having a gun" part of the American Culture? (Like McDonalds or Hollywood).
I lived in Europe and everyone there had a hunting rifle or other weapon.

No way does most of the population of Europe have a "hunting rifle or other weapon" Alex. Farmers and some folks into game, but that's a very small number of people.

The only exception is Switzerland with about a third of the population having weapons - but in reality - 99.9% are never checked from one year to the next.

I know quite a few knowledgeable people. But I am always amazed how you seem to be an expert on just about everything. You must be 85 and read 3 books a week.

The real reason every American walks the streets carrying guns: to make foreigners think we're crazy so they stay out. For some reason it doesn't work with the Mexicans.

If anything Sly - it's just getting around a bit. Ya can learn a lot by travelling places and actually living there for a few years.

You are jealous.

Well guys, watch less TV and read more books.

Also Sly, you can start here: www.wikipedia.org

I know it's not normal for the average american to understand how a person can have a high intellectual level. You don't see this very often in the states, since your education system is one of the worse and more incomplete systems in the world.

I've lived in Canada and New Zealand and never once known a single person who has a gun. In fact I don't think I've even seen a gun in person other than on a police officer. In New Zealand even the police didn't have guns. I've never felt a need to have a gun partly because no one has one. It's a completely foreign concept.

Yeah, that's real smart. Try to paw at the weapon of an armed man. Way to instantly pose yourself as a deadly threat. Moron.

People are talking about "europe" like it's one tiny country.. every country is different! very much like different states in the us.. different laws in different states!

Gun facts:

In one year, firearms killed no children in Japan, 19 in Great Britain, 57 in Germany, 109 in France, 153 in Canada, and 5,285 in the United States.!!

* Every day, more than 80 Americans die from gun violence. (Coalition to Stop Gun Violence)
* The rate of firearm deaths among kids under age 15 is almost 12 times higher in the United States than in 25 other industrialized countries combined. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
* American kids are 16 times more likely to be murdered with a gun, 11 times more likely to commit suicide with a gun, and nine times more likely to die from a firearm accident than children in 25 other industrialized countries combined. (Centers for Disease Control)

Mmmm.. these are some real shit stats

When ya consider eg... the US population is only around 4.5 times that of the UK - if the same rates were applied, means UK would have 256 firearm-related deaths and US at 5285.

If this is accurate - and no reason to think not - there is one hell of a serious problem.

Damn... read the wrong stats figure... it's even worse....

Should read - 86 UK deaths of children due to firearms offenses with the US running at 5285

The answer's much easier than many make it out to be - it's in the question...

So many Americans have weapons because so many Americans have weapons.

You are a very deluded person who doesn't even seem to understand what 'Europe' actually is let alone anything about firearm ownership.

Do so many non-Europeans (even idiots who have apparently 'lived' there) really not understand that it's not one country and each country within it has very, very different laws?

Well let's see.... we have around 33 million people here in Canada, and somewhere in the 7 to 8 million guns range. It's kind of an unanswered question as to why we have a much lower crime rate than the US, and why our cities are far FAR safer than any big American city.

But that shit Moore talked about on "Bowling for Columbine" about us leaving our doors unlocked is pure bunk. People living in small towns might still do that here, but anyone living in a decent sized city who leaves their door unlocked while they're not at home is insane.

Oh, and at present I don't own a gun.

Only reason I have a gun is because I like to pop off some rounds at a shooting range. I live in a neighborhood where I don't lock my car at night, my house is easily accessible to anyone coming in through the backyard and I'm kitty-corner from a church = I don't consider anything around me harmful. The truth be known, if someone did come unwelcome into my house, I'd grab a bat, hide behind a corner and go ninja-like on their asses. My gun is locked in a box, unloaded and the ammunition and keys are not easily accessible.

However, in all honesty, I think there are way too many irresponsible people who have access to deadly weapons. While I inherently believe that guns don't kill people ( they're fucking inanimate objects ), I have no faith in humanity as a whole to be responsible with anything; guns, children, environment, automobiles, tolerance, yadda yadda yadda.

That being said, I'm not an advocate of gun control. Rather I'm an advocate of people control.

Look, it's really, really simple man. There is no 'unanswered question' here. It's because, and get this through your frostbitten head, YOU HAVE NO BLACK PEOPLE. You have lots of Indians, lots of Asian folk. You have NO black people. And that is what separates us from you and your delicious chilled beer society. That is why we have so much violence in America, and that is why there are so many gun-related deaths every year here.

Also Sly, you can start here: wikipedia.org

I know it's not normal for the average american to understand how a person can have a high intellectual level. You don't see this very often in the states, since your education system is one of the worse and more incomplete systems in the world.

believing in steriotypes makes you oh so intelligent..

wiki isnt a book infact its a user based referance point, meaning me you and or anyone else can add or subtract information to it. Whats this mean? High chance of errors

maybe you should take you own advice

Just to refute your "wiki" quote: There was a study by Nature that checked Wikipedia articles against Britannica's articles and there wasn't a huge difference in discrepancy of information. Actually, I was surprised to see how well Wikipedia rated against the Britannica entries on same / similar topics.

Just as there are studies that refute the Nature one. There will be some mistakes in both but what i see as the biggest grievance towards wikki is it isn't really a fact-checking mechanism so much as a voting mechanism. If someone reads an entry, unless something sounds blatantly false, he or she will likely accept what it says. If there is disagreement about the facts, an edit war could break out until a consensus view develops.

This all neither here nor there, I was just amused at this posters ramble about uneducated americans should read more and then says to read wiki, it gave me a chuckle.

But back on topic, the reason we want to own guns? Did you ever see Red Dawn? WOLVERINES!
