Why are really old domains better for SEO ?

Anyone care to give me an insight ? Do search engines give them a higher trust value because of their age or something ?

Cause most new domains get sandboxed for about a year.

Well I knew that, is there anything of more significance of owning a domain thats lets say 8 years + when it comes to SEO ?

Or is it just the sandbox

I don't know, but my guess would be that they are spidered, and archived, and checked over and over for changes. Basically in the system. but, I am guessing, cuz i don't know.

Just the sandbox.

Some people buy old, already indexed domains with PR just to spam SE's.

The search engines reward older sites. It also gives older sites to get more backlinks etc etc.

Nope, but it's common knowledge IMO. SEs don't like to list new sites, bc a lot of them could be spam etc etc. Why not reward the older sites first then new?

Just like a gallery submitter. I'm going to accept a guy who's been submitting to me for 4 years instead of this new kid who's shit could be filled with spyware.

Um.... yeah... I've never had a site sandboxed. If it was sandboxed, it must have only been like a month tops.

You have reading comprehension? I didn't say 'all' sites get sandboxed.

But most do.

I'd love to hear where you got your "But most do" conclusion from.

So would a domain 10 years old rank better than a domain that was 5 years old with the search engines ?

The age of a domain is one of hundred++ different factors that determine the ranking of a site.

Maybe if the sites were 100% the same in every other respect. There are way too many other factors that determine rank. If CNN.com luanched myCNN.com tomorrow, I gaurantee it would outrank a site that has been around since the WWWs conception.

It depends on a lot more than age.

Yep, I believe it is an important factor. However, it's not just the age of the domain that's important, it's also the history.

ie if its been banned by google or not, if its traded links with bad neighbourhoods etc ? Have I missed any main points on the history of the domain or would you mind listing them if you have the time

What exactly is the score with the sandbox, is it just a theory someone came up with which spread through the SEO webmaster boards ?

i think a 'sandbox' is when you get flagged for a website that is too spammy for a keyword(s). So there really aint a sandbox - i have sites that are too spammy that got dropped down from page 1 to page 40 or whatever, now i know why - not gonna share that info though

I see, I did a bit of reading and it seems sites can be sandboxed for a number of reasons. Interesting stuff cheers !
