Tons of fake signup

Over the last couple of days, I have seen a big spike of signups on my otherwise fairly quiet site. Normally, great news, right?

Well, what if I told you that I had ten times as many signups as the day before, and five signups in a row were named Allen, and most of the rest for that day had names beginning with an A too? Or that the volume continued, without a spike in traffic, the next day, with an unusual concentration of the same email domains.

My biller is looking into what is happening. What I am trying to figure out is why. These aren't affiliate signups, so what could the motivation be for signing up to the same website a huge number of times? I figured if anyone could think of a motivation for a scam like this, it would be the people on this board.

I would have to guess that the scammer made a mistake and can't control his bot correctly.

Are they all from the same ip's or close ips ?

Could be someone carding sign ups to share password's with a group or some shit like that.

Have you checked the ips they have logged into the site with also ?

Maybe I'm cynical, but I was thinking someone could do this to drive my chargebacks up and shut down my sites. I hadn't thought to combine the idea of a scam with human/technical error. Interesting thought.

That's definitely something to look into. My login protection software is set up pretty tight right now after another problem, so I should catch if these passwords are being shared.

Yeah, bad. I wonder how much money I'll lose because of all these signups. How often does that question come up, eh?

Indeed maybe they're trying to drive up your CB rate? Just refund them if you think they're fake

probalbty a scammer that made a mistake, difficult to believ that somebody will go to that extend just to drive up your chargeback ratios (like commiting criminal offence)

It depends on the processor(s) being use. I'm almost positive Paycom and CCBill won't allow multiple signups to the same person. They have some secret formula that they use to combat the fraud.

Questions:
Do the members have the same first and last names?
Was the same credit card used?
Did they use the same processor?
Same email address?
Are these subscriptions to the same site?

I have this theory that when you purchase software from one of those really low priced SPAM email messages that the whole purpose is to collect your credit card and billing info. Most of the ones that I have taken the time to investigate point to Russia or some former block country.

They can make a decent living off the affiliate sales that slip through.

HA! You're kidding right?

CCBIll lets through ALL kinds of shit, on a DAILY basis.

Have a CC Number with CVV2, but don't know the name on the card, or the address, or the zip code, and your IP is from Vietnam.. No problem, just use CCBill, they'll accept the charge.

On a daily basis I void anywhere from 5 - 10 sales from CCBill alone. Yesh they scrub.. pfffffffffffffftttttttttttttttt.

Stolen cards in this case could be the reason.

Exactly. Had this happen in the past with a mainstream site that I was administering, and found out from the credit card processor that the scammers were just "testing" a huge database of stolen credit cards to find out which ones were valid. I'd bet you that's what's happening on your site as well.

Scammers, yes, but they aren't trying to scam YOU as much as just using your merchant account for their own needs.

yup i have run into the same issue it looks more like they are just testing the cards to see if they are valid. they make a small charge $20 then they will go buy something bigger once's it's valid. they really dont care about your site or even know what it is. they just know you got a gateway to validate there cards.
