What do you look for in a host?

Hey all,

As the topic mentions, what do you all look for in a host be it a shared, VPS or dedicated environment? We're busy finalising a new niche host for the porn industry and I thought where better to get input from then straight from the horse's mouth ;)

There are the obvious factors such as speed, reliability, support and free lapdances but what else do you take into account when choosing a host?

In the same vane, I've noticed there are a couple of hosting affiliates in our midst. What do you all look for when promoting a host?

And finally, we're always open to mutually beneficial ventures, so if anybody has anything in mind feel free to give me a shout.

Thanks

I agree to an extent, however, amongst all the crap there are still a couple of people that post intelligent replies, albeit very few of them.

The first good thing you can do is to set your taget market.
You won't be able to target all the adult market. Once you do that you'll
know more about what you have to do.

Then here is my broad based opinion.

If you are not hosting with ISPrime or NatNet, you are not getting the best service possible.

Many say that support is very important. For me, if the host gives nice, easy to understand tools, lighting speed support isn't needed.
Better give stability and user-friendly tools.

Top of the list - a non-US host, followed by all normal stuff any (or almost any host offers). The reason for non-US based is fairly obvious.

Other bit is - management who have a clue and stay the hell away from tech support while they are trying to work.

"Features" have rarely been a problem - the main problem has been people where tech support has been excellent, but the administration of the host is a joke. (This appears to be more common in larger hosting operations).

AH... And no buggering about asking stupid questions about Arin's IP justification - start that shit and bang - nada customer.

For shared/virtuals:
Have a website that clearly and easily lets me know how many domains I can host, exactly how many databases I can have, etc. Also, try to give extra info like which control panel you use, are things like ImageMagick already installed, etc.

Beyond that, I tend to search GFY (and other places) looking to see if a host has complaints. I don't care about some little outage a long time ago that wasn't your fault... I take greater note of any company (host, registrar, sponsor) with a track record of being unresponsive or not proactively communicating when there is a problem.

Na.. not just 2257. Only me, but think the old 2257 was actually a decent guideline to adopt - kinda basic stuff which *should* be in place anyways.

Reasons currently are more to do with the weekly proposals for legislation of this and that and sure, including the "new 2257" etc. The US is probably now the most unsuitable environment (least legally) for operating within the adult biz.

uptime, speed and price

I handle the support myself through my own admin...so, as long as the server is fast and it is ALWAYS up, I am pretty happy
