why is myspace so succesful?

why is myspace so succesful?

I dont understand how a site built in 2003 can become one of the most popular(if not the most popular site on the web) just 3 years later.

There are tons of other sites like it which have been established much longer.

The only possible reasons I can give are that you can do your own html thing, with other you cant and your profile is pre-set and also the populatiry of the friends feature, but surely that is not enough.

were than any other hidden tricks?

They appealed to bands (who love spamming people they don't know about their music), its free and you can do a lot of customizations to your profile (teen kids love this). Then slap on some music videos and tunes and you got a viral site waiting to take off.

But they aren't getting the media attention that myspace gets...

Myspace has been all over the news in the last couple months or so for various reasons.. mostly warning teens about putting too much personal info on it... This lets the predators know where to go lookin.. and I have no doubt that myspace is loaded with em..

and it has the built in word of mouth deal so members can invite friends from various sources in one fell swoop... Major domino effect..

a lot of musicians use that site... and then eventually big stars like Madonna joined the club... so what do you think that did to myspace? more publicity, more exposure, fans joining, etc

It's putting your personality on a page. Logging onto myspace and looking around your zip code and/or state is nearly the equivalent to walking into a house party of your choice and meeting everyone and knowing their personality within 30 minutes. Damn near 100% anonymously. Faster means to an end. Also, you get to check out fashions, music, trends, get an ego boost, etc. Anyway, most people I know use it as a free dating site.

First of all you have to take into consideration who was big before MySpace. It all started with the dating sites, and then FaceTheJury did a spinoff of that and it appealed greatly to a younger audience. Then people wanted a place that allowed them to say more and have greater human interaction, so LiveJournal exploded. Then they used PhotoBucket to put stuff on LJ. These three services were usually used simultaneously.

Then along came MySpace, and they offered all of this in a single website. That's it right there. They found the sites people like and combined them. They are still doing it. When YouTube took off, MySpace quickly added video support so they wouldn't lose anyone.

i think the musician aspect has a lot to do with it as well...my best friend is an independent musician with over 70,000 friends on his list. and, while he used to send introductory letters and friend requests back in the beginning when he was getting started on there, he hasn't done that for probably the last year...or the last 45,000 or so friends. :D

people see his comments or hear his song on someone's page or see his video playing on their friend's page....and they request him. viral marketing. it's great! :D

It has medias attention, so that makes it even be more popular. Also people would post their profiles on forums, and other people would see it and they would create account there.

For sure. People like being able to rub shoulders with celebs and myspace is as accessible as you can get without actually being at their doorstep (granted, most celeb profiles are operated by paid staff and not the celebrity - but there are some, such as the pornstar profiles, who often run it themselves).

i think there is also the element, as with any social networking site, of giving people that don't experience popularity irl - or are young enough to be addicted to it no matter how much they DO have irl - to have that sensation through the web. the bright red "new messages" text is kind of a rush for a lot of people, esp. young people.

my first internet experience was with an aol account (shut up LOL) when i was a teenager, and i still remember the little flutter of excitement when mr. aol said "you've got mail" when i logged on.

of course, it was usually spam.

I think it's the domain name... MySpace. People are greedy and it's all about MINE MINE MINE!!!!!!

But seriously, I agree with what a lot of others above have said. You get just about everything you could want on one site for Free!

Pics
Videos (streaming)
Music (streaming)
Comments/Messaging
Profiles
Mad customizability (I think this is a huge factor)
Easy search for old/new friends (For Free!)
And... the cool kids are doing it.

Especially for teens, the free part plays a big role. What other sites can they join that have all that and they don't have to ask the 'rents for cash?
