You know what I hate about fucking CANADA!

Canada is the only country in this hemisphere who has recently elected a conservative government! What a bunch of idiots!

Honestly, think about it. Down here in the US, we were smart enough to vote for a centrist in Al Gore, so the conservatives had to steal the election. Same thing just happened in Mexico, they voted for a leftist so the right had to steal it. The easiest way to tell when an election has been stolen is when the official results do not match the exit pools. Exit pools are always accurate, if you're looking for who the people actually voted for.

In Central and South America, the only way right wing regimes hold up is through brutal military repression.

So what's the deal with Canada? They actually elected this religious, far right conservative Harper character!? I'll concede that I don't follow Canadian politics as closely as I should seeing as live so close to them, but come on. I know that the centrist party who was in charge for the past decade became insanely corrupt, but that's no excuse. They're not even a two party system like us! They have a center/left alternative called the NDP! Yet they went ahead and elected a guy who wants to govern based on the bible.

I'll tell you what you guys have in store. Forget your budget surpluses, expanding economy, universal health care, and decriminalized drugs. Get ready for massive debts, wars, restriction of your personal freedoms, and a "war on drugs". Not to mention, your health care system is going to be slowly chipped away at until it collapses, like the conservatives are trying to do with our social security.

So, Canadians, if that is your real name, answer for yourself! What am I missing here? I thought you were a compassionate, educated, modern people. You took in slaves and draft dodgers when we made stupid mistakes. Why are you the only country in the Americas who has legitimately elected a conservative federal government in the last decade? You've got some explaining to do.

That's why I'm asking for an explanation.

Care to offer one? I'm curious. How did a country that the world saw as so progressive elect a religious right government? Is this such an unreasonable question?

P.S. I probably know more about Canuck politics than you do. Plus my dad could kick your dad's ass.

Yes, I understand the parliamentary system. I'm wondering why Canada didn't elect a center/left minority.

Plus I've read polls that have said that this Harper chump would win a majority if there were another election today.

You think he's harmless, wait until he has a majority. That's when he starts acting like he's above the law. Hasn't he already taken unprecedented steps to limit the media's access to his government? Plus he's pulled a Bush and restricted images of Canadian coffin's coming in from Iraq. That's just the start.

I'm not trying to insult Canada here, my thread title was kind of a joke, a jab at all the Canada haters here.

It's called 12 years of corruption. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Remember when the US had 12 years of Reagan/Bush then they elected Clinton for 8. It's what happens.

Yes, I realize this, but... you're not a two party system. Isn't the NDP the party that brought you universal health care, the Canadian Pension Program, etc etc? Why not give them a shot at a minority?

That being said, every Canadian publication I read during the election season was blatantly pro conservative. I was surprised. The Globe and Mail especially, I used to think it was one of the best papers in the world. Most of my Canuck friends have told me that local papers were even worse, so I suspect this has something to do with the swing to the right. We all like to think we're not influenced by propaganda, but we are.

Before questioning our election decisions, take a look in the mirror. You re-elected Bush. The guy lied about WMD, has spent billions fighting terrorism in a country that has no legitimate ties to Bin Laden, your dollar has dropped to pathetic levels, New Orleans fiasco, so on, and so on.

Hey, in case you haven't noticed up here in Canada we have very few choices on who to elect, just like the U.S.: It's dumb or dumber.

The NDP is basically a western party with little or no representation in the east.

Hey buddy, you're preaching to the choir. It makes me sick that Bush is our leader. He has not done a single positive thing for this country. It's been one disaster after another.

That being said, we didn't elect him. We do not have real democracy down here anymore. The exit pools gave Kerry a clear win in 2004, this proves that we're at least trying to do better. If we had democracy George Bush would not be our president. The right controls the fucking voting machines, we have no chance of regaining democracy until our economy collapses completely and there's nothing left for them to steal.

That's why I'm wondering, since Canadians have had a front row seat for our disaster, why they'd go out and willingly subject themselves to the same thing. They still have democracy, at least for now. My plan was to move to Toronto once it got too bad down here. Now where the fuck am I supposed to go??!!

First of all, I don't think Canadians are stupid. My insults were in jest. I respect Canada. I thought everyone would get that. I appologize to those Canucks who didn't.

Second, it doesn't make Americans stupid to not have democracy. Most of us realize it, but there's nothing we can do about it. For all intents and purposes we're a military dictatorship. Pretty tough to get out of when you're talking about the biggest military in modern history.

He's acting moderate to win a majority. I've read some of Harper's old writing, he's no moderate. Just like how Bush ran as a "compassionate conservative" in 2000 before anyone had the chance to see him actually govern.

Literally, it boils down to the Liberals fucked up and didn't own up to anything nor did they appologize for anything. They were highly confrontational with the US, yes they had good reason (I think anyways) but it was tad too much. Deals with China for oil, the refusal of a North American unified security pass, or intergrated immigration policy (remember right after 9/11 all the jokers at fox news claimed all the terrorists came from Canada, ignoring their own fucked up immgration policies, and Mexicos -- does even have a immigration policy??). Anyways, all this crap, it helped isolate us from our biggest ally.

The result: the Canadian people went conservative, I don't think it really has anything to do with how conservative they are, or that they agree with Harper, but more to do with their pocket books, saving face, and frustration with the Liberals. Thank god it was only a minority so that jackass can't do too much damage. I think that Martin would have made a fine long term PM he was much more pro-US then most people will give him credit for, and he wasn't a raging jackass...

Sure we have lots of different parties, but if you were to really look at the system there are only 2 parties here. All the rest act as counter-balances. Like the NDP will never get strong foothold here, too many people throw around the word communism and leftist like it is a bad thing. The Bloc will never have support beyond Quebec because they only serve to further their own agenda. But in cases like this last election, thank god we have the NDP and the Bloc to help ensure a minority government for Harper.

Heres a news flash for ya.
The popular vote does not elect the president. And exit polls are not a good way of determining the outcome.

Are you talking about the florida county commisioner in the 2000 election who was a democrat and everyone, democrat and republican signed off on the ballots that may have been a tad confusing and gave us the hanging chads.

Other than that whats your evidence the the right controls them?

True, very true.

Couldn't have said it any better. Spot-on every point.

Yes, that is a news flash for me. It's easy to give people news flashes when you make up things out of thin air that aren't true.

Thanks Mr. Colbert.

No, I'm talking about the conservative supreme court who originally appointed Bush as Presient, and the Diebold and ES and S voting machine that we currently use, both companies have openly republican CEOs. The well know quote from the CEO of Diebold was something along the lines of 'I will do everything in my power to deliver the votes of Ohio to George Bush'. The fact that these companies are controlled by republicans and have absolutly no paper trail or other form of accountability is well know and not debated.

In Florida, the hanging chad bullshit was irrelevent. I'm not sure why you'd bring that up. The supreme court ordered an end to the recount and appointed Bush as President. The votes were never counted.

Could have said it similarly though, smartass. The inclusion of the word "fuckikng" Canada in your title was a dipshit thing to do in the first place. Secondly, if you HAD been even lightly following the Political scene here over the past 2 years you would have known that the Libs came under fire over several issues to the point where a lot of people who previously voted for them were calling them thieves and scammers. The swing to the Conservatives was a backlash reaction, and it was highly predictable, at least to anyone actually paying attention.

Your rant is foolish and ignorant my friend, but hopefully you got your enlightenment in some of the answers. But would it have been so backbreakingly tough to just say "Why did Canada vote in the Conservatives?" instead of coming from a "Fuck are you people ever stupid" perspective?

Stew on it.

First of all, I do follow Canadian politics a bit. I know about the sponsorship scandal, the gomery commission, etc. I get the CBC Newsworld on satellite and I occasionally read Canadian papers.

Second, my question was, if the only reason for the change was punishing the Liberal Party, why not swing to the left and elect the NDP instead of electing a far right religious conservative who does not represent any of the values the rest of the world thinks that Canada stands for.

Third, as I've said already, my "fucking Canada" perspective was tongue in check. I figured anyone who read my post could see that. A jab at the "I hate Canada" crowd. Plus it can't hurt the amount of people who read the thread.

Hey, I do love Canada, I hope Canadians reading this thread realize that. I just don't understand their sudden election of a right wing religious jackoff. I mean, if it were the old PC party with that other dude leading them, that would be a different story. But this Harper is a maniac. Right now he's tricking everyone into believing he's a moderate, to get a majority. I just hope Canadians see through it, which can't be easy seeing as the media is 100% behind him, like ours is with Bush.

Sigh, do I really have to point out how poorly you express yourself by quoting you and showing just how poorly you get your points across? Okay, I guess it must be done as you obviously have anger management issues and it's effecting your communication skills where the original point gets lost in a flurry of words that would only annoy and anger people.

Canada is the only country in this hemisphere who has recently elected a conservative government! What a bunch of idiots!
lol, way to show the love you have for Canadians by calling them idiots. Also, they did vote, they did engage in the political process, there was no shady dealings, and just because the outcome isn't to your liking doesn't make it wrong.

Quote:
So, Canadians, if that is your real name, answer for yourself! What am I missing here? I thought you were a compassionate, educated, modern people. You took in slaves and draft dodgers when we made stupid mistakes. Why are you the only country in the Americas who has legitimately elected a conservative federal government in the last decade? You've got some explaining to do.
Like they have any explaining to do? Why? Because they took part in a legitmate election and voted based on a number of factors for a conservative? And saying, "I thought you were a compassionate, educated, modern people." Implies because they voted the way they did that this somehow negates those facts.

Now, you may love Canadians, you may love Southerners as well, but you do have an assbackward way of expressing yourself.
