Why is it that they take 30 days to clear, whereas it's only 5 or so days with most banks and even paypal?

Because the merchant has 30 days to complete the charge when they have placed a authorization.
Since ePassporte is a debit card and you can get an account with out having a credit card attached to your account (sponsor opened accounts) dropping the pending charges before time would open up for fraud.

It can be dropped before if you get the merchant to fax us on their letterhead that they don't intend to process the transaction.

It should be faxed to +1.310-564-1751

(just a reminder, ePassporte?s Corporate and Sales and Marketing offices will be closed today and tomorrow for the 4th of July holiday. Wire loads and withdrawal requests sent to ePassporte after 12 pm PST on Friday June 30th will be processed on Wednesday July 5th, 2006.)

Makes sense, was just a $1 authorization from starbucks so was just curious more than anything. Guess i know not to rent a car or pay for a hotel room with it heh.
