relationship between system admin and perl programmer
ok, in my day job, I program perl.
they just hired a new system admin, which won't let me run .cgi or .pl scripts before I tell him exactly what that script does. after he approves, he gives runs the chmod command to enable me to run the file. is this normal? |

Sounds like you need a working environment to make any progress??
Na.. all bollocks unless that is some genuine and valid reason for this stuff. PS.. Hate to say it, but does your SysAdmin have a clue?? Surprising how many don't - even in large corps.

The reason is that he simply don't trust you. On the other hand, it seems like he's gonna do his job proprely so deal with it ;)

I am curious how you can install but not chmod your own file? He disabled the chmod command? LOL

Sounds reasonable to me, his job is security of your network and he's ensuring your scripts aren't a weak point.

so what basicaly happens: I send him the file via email, along with the purpose. I edit and run it on my local computer first so it should be a one time upload when I email it. |

But his thinking is flawed. He doesn't trust the code the programmer coded yet he trusts what the programmer says |

Quit the job and work adult full time, if you're a decent programmer there tons of money just waiting to be made.

Bitch him out the first time and set a precident so it won't happen again... Having been both a sysadmin and a programmer (often at the same time) having full access sped everything up tremendously... I'd be hella pissed if I had to deal with a loser admin like that.
