relationship between system admin and perl programmer

ok, in my day job, I program perl.
they just hired a new system admin, which won't let me run .cgi or .pl scripts before I tell him exactly what that script does.
after he approves, he gives runs the chmod command to enable me to run the file.
is this normal?

Sounds like you need a working environment to make any progress??

Na.. all bollocks unless that is some genuine and valid reason for this stuff.

PS.. Hate to say it, but does your SysAdmin have a clue?? Surprising how many don't - even in large corps.

The reason is that he simply don't trust you. On the other hand, it seems like he's gonna do his job proprely so deal with it ;)

i'm known for being the most trust worthy programmer in the company, no way he is choosing by that....besides isn't the system admin suppose to make it possible for the users of the servers? even if some of them are programmers?

Sounds reasonable to me, his job is security of your network and he's ensuring your scripts aren't a weak point.

no, I used to have putty access before this guy decides no one should have it.
so what basicaly happens: I send him the file via email, along with the purpose.
I edit and run it on my local computer first so it should be a one time upload when I email it.

that could be his reason.
But his thinking is flawed.
He doesn't trust the code the programmer coded yet he trusts what the programmer says

the logic of it is that as a system admin he knows what is more risky, knowing that file managment(moving, deleting etc.) can more of a risk than reading a text file.

Quit the job and work adult full time, if you're a decent programmer there tons of money just waiting to be made.

well, you'd be surprised how moving a file can be manipulated to delete a file or do anything else nasty.
Does he check the code for input validation and other stuff ?
I doubt.

Bitch him out the first time and set a precident so it won't happen again... Having been both a sysadmin and a programmer (often at the same time) having full access sped everything up tremendously... I'd be hella pissed if I had to deal with a loser admin like that.

That's true, he should be reviewing the code before it goes onto a live server

Inclined to agree fuzebox - it can be kinda impractical to work like that. Ain't got time to waste on shit.
