Why is it that when you go to church all you do is sing about how great and holy God is?

So "our father in heaven" wants to be reassured by all of us, over and over, how great he is? Is that really what he wants for his children?

I don't know about you, but I want my son to have the best out of life and achieve all his dreams. I don't want him sitting in front of me all the time telling me how great I am.

Maybe the Christian God has a really big inferiority complex or something.

That's funny, I used to go to church every Sunday, and I never heard of any of those songs.

However, I did find the lyrics to "Awesome God" (your second example) to be pretty amusing. Especially, "

Just venting. As many know, I was raised in church. My dad is a retired pastor. This thread was started after I saw a commercial on TV this morning that was trying to sell "worship cds". The lyrics turn my stomach.

God is supposed to be our "father". And he is supposed to be a perfect father. He is the role model men are supposed to emulate in their own relationships with their own children.

Religion isn't inherently bad. Actually, many religions do a lot of good on this planet. It's the few humans in a group that cause the rest of the group they belong to to have a bad image. Granted any group taking a "fundamentalist" approach to their religion has a greater concentration of "bad" individuals, but again, that boils down to a few hundred thousand out of billions.

Nope, nothings off topic and no doubt many here were brought up in the church as was I. It was what taught me right from wrong among other things but the guilt was overwhelming and just had to move on.

But you have to separate Christians from Catholic. They are not the same.
Christians = born again wheras as Catholics are not.

There is no molestation in a non-denominational/fundamentalist church. Notice it was priests in the Caholic church.

To call God the "Father" is a metaphor that helps people shape their relationship with him. It's a guideline, a rough behavioral mold. No one knows the mind of God, though many claim to. It is absurd even to try. All that people do in church, they do for themselves, not for God.

You answered your own question, you are imperfect, God is. Emulate does not mean your relationship with your son has exactly every characteristic man's relationship with God does. Your thread was meant to do one thing, poke at Christians, if you really were perplexed about your question you'd pick up the phone and call your dad. I apologize that my reply to yours was a bit out of order - anger for anger type thing.

However, I was just trying to say that belief isn't necessarily bad. It's the few individuals who misuse a belief to fuck with other simpleminded individuals so they start catering to their whim (beliefs) that is bad. Most groups do this. Regardless if they're talking about some god, saving a tree branch, or convincing another that their fellow human from across the border is evil and should die because their neighbor is wrong.
