Its rival research outfit, Net Ratings, tracks the number of visitors to porn Web sites. It says that in April 2001, there were 22.9 million unique visitors to porn sites. This says nothing about how long each visitor stayed or whether they spent a dime. In any event, the number of visitors is less than the number who visited news sites (41.1 million), finance sites (34.2 million) or greeting card sites (25.5 million). When was the last time you heard anyone talk about how greeting card sites dominate the Net?

well, that's complete bullshit. i get about 3 M unique visitors/day - or around 90 M uniques/month. i guess i have over three times all uniques to all porn sites. right.

I think the numbers are way off but what your missing is that even though someone does 1 million uniques a day you just can't add that up over the course of the month to come up with how many unique individuals you had to your site. You would have to drop a cookie on each surfer that would last at least a month to figure out how many individuals actually visited your site/s; then you'd have to figure out how many of those had used different computers or cleared their cookies/temp cache. There's definitly more then 22.9 million people surfing for porn on the internet in any given month though.

ya think? of course - but a unique visitor (how we have things set up) is a unique ip visiting the site in a 24 hour period. after 24 h, if they visit again, it is another unique.

I know that but I don't believe thats how they were counting uniques. I think they were actually trying to determine how many individuals surf for porn in any given month. I personally think their way off though.

well of course they are way off. let's say my 90 M uniques consititute only 10 % truly unique visitors over an entire month (the % is much higher than that, but let's pretend

I did not see that it specified these figures apply to the USA but I suspect that is what the article was speaking about.

The population of the USA is approximately 260-270 million. I may be mistaken, but I think that less than one third of the population own computers so this would be less than 90 million computers, so 22.9 million would represent approximately 25% of those computers going to porn sites. Actually I think the figure is way less than one third of homes that have computers.

I am open for corrections.

I did a search and what I came up with was some stats for the year 2000.

Approximately 100 million homes in the USA.

35% of homes without computers.

This leaves the number of homes with computers at 65 million.

Of the 65 million homes with computers 49% were online.

This means approximately 32 million homes were online in 2000.

The average number of hours online per week (49% of homes) 1-5 hours.

Bottom line:

The number Forbes came up with was 22.9 million for April 2001; so the number appears to be about right to me.

Actually it looks high to me. 22.9 million would mean that about two thirds of the homes are surfing porn and I doubt that it is that high. No one in my circle of friends surfs for porn. I would know because I have known them for a large portion of my adult life; know them very well and have served with most of them in the Army.

UNIQUES is not a very useful indicator -- let's say you do 3M uniques/day and then let's say you ran some stats on how many unique IP's you do in a month -- my random guess would be that in a month you would have about 60-70M uniques/month -- but that doesn't mean shit because so many surfers share the same IP's!! I bet if you collected IP's for 1 month -- you would probably find that only 50% of all traffic is really "unique"...

But you are only taking into consideration traffic from the USA...

Also just because 10 sites have 50M uniques/month doesn't mean that there is 500M traffic on the internet -- because a lot of surfers will hit many or all of the 10 sites...

look at how many non-porn sites go up and then down. Then look at the porn industry using the same scale.

Most people will simply not visit pornsites 'cause they know they're watched. This makes these statistic programs highly biased to the 'non-adult' sites

Additional... the number are off I think, but I don't know how far they're off. SexTracker saves a 'unique' for a day. These people are talking about 'uniques a month'... so if you're visiting a site on day one and again on day 28 of a month you're still one single unique. And 'cause they have that piece of software installed a unique really is a unique. No cookies that are not accepted or removed, no Internet Eraser programs than can make you a 'unique' more than once.

That combined with the fact all these people are traced closely will get the number they're talking about in this article.
