But you're right about the 70-200 - it's fine when you're shooting outdoor and can get some distance, but it's pretty much useless for everything indoors. Get a 24-70 or something like that, maybe even a 17-35 if you can keep an eye on the distortion. If you want a "cheap" high quality lens you could also give the 50 mm 1.4 USM a shot. You have to move around a lot because of it's fixed focal length, but you can get great pictures for US $300 or so (way more expensive over here).

So I guess the Canon 30D will probably work as well. Looks like $1600 CAN vs. $800 (Rebel) for the body. I have lenses from my Canon A2E so I'll probably stay in the Canon brand.

I shoot with a Nikon D2x, with a wireless wt-a2 directly to my Macbook pro, using Bibble Labs software so as I shoot the images show on the screen in real time.

Nice to be able to look over and make sure everythings looks right and also gives a model the chance to see first hand what she is doing. I shoot Raw+jpg, and only send the jpg part to the computer wirelessly... So I still have to Dump the 4 gig CF cards once in a while to my Epson p2000 for backup. This is a sweet setup cause on a shoot I get the jpgs on the laptop, and when I dump a get the Raws AND the jpegs on the p2000- so it's like having an emergancy backup of the files just in case. Oh, for Video I have a vx2000. Love it. no reason to upgrade it.

Yes, it is a good lens but again...the IS for that lens is a waste of money. There is a reason they offer it in a non IS version as well. I've shot with both and I own the non IS version. ![]() When you step up to something more powerful....Then IS is good to have. ![]() |

The 30D is a good choice but what are you paying the extra money for over the 20D? Will you use spot metering and is the larger LCD needed? The spot metering is something I would use from time to time but most do not. You may want to save a few hundred bucks and go with the 20D. ![]() |

I agree with Aaron I bought the little bro to the 70-200 L / 2.8 the 4.0 , the L glass is amazing but unless you shoot in a warehouse its too long for regular rooms. Im going to sell it and either buy the 28-70 L /2.8 its the standard for adult or go with primes I havent decided yet.

depends on how much content you need to shoot, and where ya intend to shoot it . . . for what I shoot I need a pro body, dean capture needs a pro body for his work, arron m doesn't . . it's about focus speed and metering ability as well as 1 of 2 other little bells and whistles that are very important for accuracy and speed in some shooting environments . . if yer gonna shoot pro/am or straight am, 3-4 sets in 1/2 day the rebel will be fine even if ya intend to shoot 2-3 sets an hr the rebel will be fine . . know a top shooter that uses rebels and loves them . . personally the rebel, canon d20-30 or Nikon d50-70-200 etc can't handle my work flow . . 99% of prosumer cameras these days will do the job and do it with the 'kit' lens supplied -bmb |

I had Nikons version of the 70-200 VR. Great lens, just not much use for it so I got rid of it. I'm looking at a Sigma 30mm 1.4 right now, It's running 350-400 bucks, Cheaper than Nikons 35mm 1.4 and is actually getting much better reviews, best part, it gets the D2x close to the 50mm Mark since you have to factor in the 1.5 magnifacation caused by the smaller image sensor. For Nikon users this would be a great lens for any type of event shooting, using availiable light and no flash. For shooting I have started to really use the nikon 105mm macro lens, it's outstanding. BUT it really becomes a 170mm on the D2x requiring you to have some distance between you and your model. So I have also been shopping for a good 70-75mm or a DX version of the 105mm. Main thing to remember when your shopping for a GOOD entry level camera is to think ahead. The cameras not the expensive part, the GLASS is. and your going to really be limiting yourself to a brand once you start to biuld your lens collection. Both Canon and Nikons are great cameras, so it really comes down to what you prefer. Also watch out for the "consumer" SLRS, They are rated pretty low on the actual number of pictures they can take. A few of them are around 50,000 pictures. This is due to the construction of the shudder. The pro cameras have a much higher picture count (There are for Pros) You might think 50,000 images is a lot, but you will be suprosed how fast you can shoot that number once your really start using the camera. I got over 250,000 images from a D100... with it still going strong.

That's complete horse shit right there. First of all, any pro shooter who doesn't know that it's a Canon 20D and not a d20 is obviously not familiar with the 20D at all. If you have any experience with a camera then you tend to know what the real model is and not call it by the wrong name. Secondly.....My average shoot consists of 6 to 10 sets per a day. I've shot well over 250,000 images with my 20D and it works as good now as it ever has. Can't handle your work flow? Nigga please. There's nothing wrong with being brand loyal but at least have some experience with the other product before you make false claims about it. ![]() |

It's a heavy bitch for sure. I've not shot any content with it so I can't really say but the outdoor stuff I have shot.....Even with the IS, a tripod seriously increases the the quality. |

And for the record....Dean doesn't need a pro body. He wants one and does great work with it but Dean could run circles around most shooters using just about any camera.

After using Nikon film cameras for many, many years I finally made the switch to digital when I had the opportunity to do a website. I decided to go with the Canon 20D and I bought the 70-200 mm 2.8 non IS to go with it. I use the 200mm most of the time because of the style of my shooting.

The 20D was a great camera for what I was doing even though I'm on my second one after the first one broke. My entire site was shot using the 20D, the kit lens that came with it and the 200mm. Once I get my post count up I'll be able to post some pics but for now here's a link to one of my galleries. Add the www stuff to the front to get it working. julie-clarke.com/public_html/promo/bd/julie_clarke_H.html |
