Should I take in a stray vintage Vette???

OK, came across this locally. It's in damn good condition for a 20-year old model, and I'm already haggling with the dealer that has it. The price is reasonable, and the maintenance records and CarFax reports are exceptional.

1986 Chevrolet Corvette
Mileage: 72,000
Body Style: Coupe
Exterior Color: Silver
Interior Color: Gray
Engine: 8 Cylinders, 350ci TPI
Transmission: Automatic
Drivetrain: RWD
Doors: 2
Wheelbase: 96"
Features: ABS, Air Conditioning, AM/FM Radio, Cassette Radio, Cruise Control, Leather Interior, Power Locks, Power Mirrors, Power Seats, Power Steering, Power Windows, Radial Tires, Rear Window Deforster, Tilt Wheel, Tinted Glass

I'm starting to think this little race puppy needs a new home.

NOPE! Keeping the 'Stang as the daily driver, but wanting something to play with on the side. The Vette could make a nice mistress.

I have a '68 Harley and have a problem considering it "vintage." My '86 is not even close to being vintage.

I would think a vehicle has to be at least 50 years old to be vintage.

Had to Google it:

According to ICBC's rules, to be eligible for the special discounts a car, whether antique or collector, must be at least 30 years old. Which means that as of January 2005 any automobile built in 1975 or earlier now qualifies as "vintage." So from this moment forward only cars that meet ICBC's definition will be referred to as vintage, a limit that makes life easier when deciding which vehicles to feature in upcoming articles.

Well pardon the fuck out of me, I guess the terms "Vintage", "Antique", and "Classic" can only be used when somebody who is really old is constantly posting, posing, and taking pictures with women young enough to be his grand-daughter.

My personal dictionary has now been updated.

over here 20 to 30 year old cars are called "youngtimers" - compared to "oldtimers", that are 30 years and older.

one of my cars is also 20 years old, i prefer them over any new car that everyone can buy.

and i really loved that Vette when I was a kid, so I would say: go for it!

If you like the C4 bodystyle then get a '96 model. More power, more reliable, and overall better looking.

Really?

What is a historical vehicle or a vintage vehicle?

A historical vehicle is a vehicle that is more than 25 years old. A vehicle qualifies for a historical registration when it begins the 26th model year. For example, a 1978 model vehicle qualifies for historical registration in 2004.

Some vehicles that are less than 25 years old and have unique characteristics can qualify for a historical registration. The DMV determines if the vehicle has historical, classic or exhibit value.

A vintage vehicle is a historical vehicle and receives a historical registration. The registrant of a vintage vehicle can put vintage plates on the vehicle. Vintage plates are authentic NYS vehicle plates that were issued during the model year of the vehicle. More information about vintage plates appears below.

In Massachusetts you can get an "antique" plate if your car is more than 25 years old AND you only drive it to shows. If you're caught driving it other than to a show, they take the plate.

The alternative is year of manufacture, as there are no restrictions by the state. The head of each DMV office has to personally inspect each plate to be sure it's authentic and doesn't have too much wear and/or rust.

Your insurance company, however, can set restrictions. Hagerty Insurance, for example, really has no mileage limitations for classic cars. Other companies I called limited me to either just going to shows or 1,000 miles per year or less. Hagerty won't, however, let you use a classic as a daily driver.

vintage? i have a car much older than that vette and it is NOT vintage. Hell that vette would be lucky to be referred to as a classic.

My car dealer friend just bought an 87 Corvette Convertible with 75,000 km, always stored inside, absolutely mint shape for $10,000 Canadian. He sold it a week later for $14,000 Canadian. Just to let you know what they are worth around here.

I was surprised how nice the car was. I never heard a lot of nice things about the 80's vettes, but after driving in this one I really wanted to buy it myself.
