If a hosting company was under attack how long ...

If a hosting company was under attack, how long should it take for them to get back on their feet?
I have a site with ukoshost.com, it has been slow as crap since yesterday Support claims they were under dos attack and are doing everything they can to make things run smooth again. My site times out, speed increases sometimes but drops back again. In cpanel the server stats has a red blinking light for usr/home with a 94% load. httpd has also a red blinking light and so does server load

How much time should it take to resolve this or did they put me on a server that has way to much sites on it?

Any comments are welcome.

It's unfortunate when networks are under attack. It depends upon how much experience the techs have with blocking these attacks. Good luck to you. If there is anything I can do, let me know

you can get a dedicated server for about $10 a day.

Yes I'm thinking to put that site on a dedicated server as soon it starts making money. For now I'm just working on it.

I did a traceroute on it, seems like the load time of 60 ms is causing me trouble. When I compare it to another site of mine that loads fine I get a speed of 21 ms.
The support I get from this company is great only been with them for a few months.

a dedicated server wont mitigate a attack :P if someone wants you down sending 21bit packets will generates millions of pps and kill switches/routers. with only 1-2gbps of bandwidth.

If you know what you're doing you can do it with less than 1-2gb :D

I meant... if he is on a shared server, chances are that another site on the server is being attacked and slowing his site down. If he were on a dedicated, you could block that attack in 15 to 20 seconds.. but he doesn't know what website on his server is being attacked, and it doesn't sound like his hosting company does either.

lots of good hosting companies around here will give you a dedicated for a cheap price and advertising space on your site.. because they will know how much traffic you are getting and know how much of a discount to offer for space.

depends on how many pps the device can handle, 21bit is a tcp headers in a packet.

atleast i think its 21bit

If it was a real host the dos attack wouldnt last more then a few seconds, hence why you see some of the big host around not go down, everyone gets attacked but with the right knowedge and or hardware its very preventable.

It is a lousy situation for the client(s) as well as the host ... Sometimes, the DV will take the box off the network .

Good luck.

Ok they took care of everything, site is running fine again but still slow in comparison to my other site. They did a traceroute and the lack of speed I had was caused by some sort of huge backup they did wich is finished. Now their average speed is around 40 ms, not great but not bad. So for now I will leave the site with them. When the site is starting to get traffic and generates cash I will move it to a dedicated server. The reason I took this company was because I needed some special software installed on the server to run a specific script. My normal hosting company was to lazy to install it and ukoshost was able to make my script based site running. They score great in uptime, tools, support but score bad in speed.

Deal only with a true BGP'd host that can trace the attack back though its pipes. Fairly easy to see where tons of inbound bandwidth is coming from.
A good host would trace it back and isolate which network is coming from.
All of the networks involved will see the spike of bandwidth coming through.
Of course, this is not true in all situations, especially very diverse and geographically scaled DDoS attacks. Having the proper network filters in place can help mitigate the affects of a DDoS. They are not always entirely preventable however they can be tamed into a mere nuisance.

:-)
Cheers.

Why is 40ms not great? 40ms is fast.

Yes looks like you can't really tell by looking at the amount ms.
Gfy for example goes like 162 ms and so does thehun.

Anyway I tried several online speed test tools and the conclusion is that the site is just slow. When I click it from google or from yahoo it takes 5 or 6 seconds while normal sites just take up to a single second to reach.

Ok the problems have been solved for the time being. I just got this mail from the hosting company:

"The overload was caused by huge amount of scripts of a few accounts which were eating up available RAM and also by backup process at a certain time. The account causing has been removed and there's currently no overloading on your hardware node at the moment.

We apologise for the inconvenience this caused you."

Site is running up to speed again now like it should.
To bad this took so long and a big to the script kiddies. For stuff like this you are forced to pay 150$ a month on a dedicated server.
Still going to get me a dedicated box when it gets traffic and makes

Thanks for the input.
