Have Any Canadians Bought New Vehicles From The USA And Saved Big $$$?

I am looking at buying a new 07 Escalade ESV and since the US dollar is so far down I thought I might be able to get a great deal via buying in the USA. The only thing I am worried about is warranty issues and if I can get the vehicle warrantied here in Canada.

Has anyone bought a brand new vehicle from the USA and saved significant $$$ without having too many issues?

DH

I asked about this with a dealer last week at the automall ,
they said its not worth it at all cause of customs duty fees , broker , taxes all that jazz . In the end you will pay equal or possibly even more .
*sigh* but i know what you mean DH cars are so much cheaper
in the states and now even moreso with the shit exchange rates .

Yeah my tax accountant just bought a 911 Twin Turbo Porsche from the states (thru ebay) and he saved himself a bundle.

He said there were very few issues and he would do it again.

Another issue would be the warrenty. Would you need to drive it back to the states to get it serviced?

Let me know if you do it Mark, I'd much rather buy a car in US funds with the way the markets are.

NAFTA allows you to buy some thing that is old (I dont know how old) and bring it in to Canada and only pay GST. My brother had a A8 in US and bought that back to Toronto. Also he had the car in US for a year when he worked their, so that may be some thing different

canadian dealers will honor the warranty.

how it works out is you have to pay whatever the state tax is (california tax 8%), pst, gst, and duty (at least if its an import) which is like 8%. there are also a couple of minor fees like a/c tax and a possible weight tax if its a truck, but those are only a couple hundred bucks. there are potentially some major costs from making it meet canadian safety / emissions but most new cars are fine if they meet US standards. plus of course however much it costs to transport the vehicle, shipping can be like 1-2k, or whatever gas + hotel + airfare is to get you there and back if you drive it yourself.

ya length of ownership can make a difference. i know bringing my car from canada to the US if i'd had it over 2 years i didnt have to pay tax but under a year i had to pay a "use tax" of like 8%.
