actually i live in Istanbul to but irthquiks & hurrycanes are problem for many part of the world; i agreed that we mast do somethings to do better for substructure of city.
however there are some works about that in anycase.

Turkey is a nice place, good food, good beer, a lot of history, nice beaches, night life, and is really cheap. If you can travel there, you won't regret...but it has uuuugly women, so bring your owns or get ready for some horny russian hookers.
