A friend of mine wants me to be a business partner to open a Hookah bar. I'm in the process of doing research to see if it would be a profitable investment. Like any investment I know there are a ton of variables to consider(taxes, overhead, location....). We would want to start small with a couple of hookah's($120-200 each) furniture and the cost of renting space.

I talked to a local owner of a hookah bar in my hometown and pulls in about $5-6k in profit after taxes and expenses and being in business for only a year and a half. His place isnt very impressive, but seems to be doing well Does anyone have any experiences in the hookah business?

In Los Angeles Hookah Bars are on the rise and I know they make money. I know a couple people who own some.

I think if I had a bar I would also sell accessories and such, both online and off, as part of the business. Basically the business would have 3 different main revenue streams.

http://www.hookah-shisha.com/ there are multiple hoses on a hookah, you can add a plastic disposible tip at the end of each hose. After the hookah session you remove the plastic piece for the next customers.

There is currently no hookah bars in this growing city where the major university(approx 40,000 attend) is located. I wont say which university it is, but a couple of red flag in my mind have come up. Why isn't there a hookah bar their currently....the city isnt THAT small. There isnt any zoning issues with our location. Also, the people that attend the university are predominately conservative, so i dont know if that would affect business.

I'm sure dealing drugs is a problem at any bar for that matter. You can't stop all instances of illegal transactions, but with a solid team of employees and strict management this problem could be minimized.....I guess every industry has its risks, but thats part of entrpreneurship.
