People using adwords...

Do you usually bid to get the #1 position or do you prefer to pay less and end up 4th place for example?

It depends on the keyword and what I'm promoting. My best guess is 5% top spot, 85% 3 through 8 and the remainder on the second page.

Are you sure your bid is high enough for your ad to actually show up? The estimates can be misleading. Sometimes they indicate a certain number of clicks per day even when your bid is too low to make the bottom of the list.

You might try boosting your bid for a couple of minutes to see if your ad shows up. If it's a high cost keyword I'd keep a live tail on your logs grep'ing for google in case it lights and you start getting slammed in the wallet.

most surfers try at least 3 links before they buy.

If I understand correctly, your ads have never had any impressions, right?

An example bid for a keyword set of mine that is at the top:

Default bid:
USD $0.80 Max CPC [?]
Content bid:
USD $0.03 Max CPC [?] (always watch your content bids -- scammers abound)

If I were to drop the default search bid to $0.19 for that keyword set the ad wouldn't even run, yet under "Estimate Search Traffic" it says I would be spending $330 per day, which is nowhere near reality (there isn't that much traffic).

I've never seen an option for bid whatever it takes. I do have each campaign capped, but I've always seen that as a stop-gap in case something goes bonkers when I don't have my eye on it. I've never actually hit a cap.

I"ve doing some adwords for a mainstream deal for a few years. All of the sudden last week without changing anything, my clicks just dropped to 1/5 of what they were getting daily.

I dont understand, it wasn't a new campaign or anything. I guess a new player came in town and started outbidding me.

Yikes! Find some less expensive keywords to practice with first.

Make sure you do the math to be sure you can make your money back before you bet the farm.

Smart move. Once you get the hang of it you can ratchet it up as high as your budget will allow.

You'll have to spend more than $30 to figure out what works, but you can spread it out over a period of time.

Best of luck!

Another tip... use Google Trends to find out which countries (Regions) are the top clickers for your keyword(s), then use the filters to only show your ads for those top countries.

I would seriously worry more if they buy or not. I mean China can be the top clicking country but i dont think i want them to click my ads.

Thanks for the tip, but I think I will keep the $4,500+ I make a month from one sponsor with one keyword with my PPC.

Don't ask, don't tell, but I suspect it's the same (and only) sponsor I push with PPC.

Adwords...

#1 - Adwords works like the sandbox. A certain amount of favoritism is given to the people who have been there the longest. So if you are a newb trying to be the first one for something like Milf Hunter, good luck to you. You can put up a bid of $20 per click and it wouldn't matter.

#2 - Adwords is on a clicks per shown ratio. So even if you spend $10 per click on Milf Hunter, the guy with a better ad for $0.18 a click will still be #1.

#3 - Setting a small budget is one of the biggest factors for showing your ad less... If you set it to $100 per month and $30 per day, good luck... Google bases who gets shown bigtime on their ability to pay consistently... So someone with a lower bid but a $1000 a month/$150 a day budget will kick your ass even though they never get anywhere near the budget amount. They just have to show they have balls...

Its kinda odd though they do that. I mean when youre just starting out with adwords its really hard to get decent listings and results. It took me months of having my account to make some good sales with the same campaign.

Ok I can tell you that with a $30 a month budget and $5 per keywords it's no wonder you aren't getting any impressions.

First of all $5 is WAY to high to be bidding. You shouldn't even be bidding $1 for any keyword.

Second $30 a month is WAY to small of a budget. Even if you were only paying 5 cents per click that would be too small. I can tell you that usually you'll spend maybe a 1/3 - 1/2 of what you actually budget for. If my budget was set at what I actually spent I would get maybe 1/2 to 1/3 the clicks I get. $1 a day means they won't charge you more than $30 a month not that they will actually charge you $30. If you really only want to spend $30 a month you should set your monthly budget to at least $75. which would be $2.50 a day. But like I said $30 is WAY to small. If you are just "testing the waters" you're better off spending that $30 over a week, but even that is too small. If you're not willing to spend at least $100 then maybe you shouldn't get into AdWords. So $100 over a week is $14 a day so I would set my daily budget at $30 minimum in order to be able to spend that $100. Not like you can't pause your ads if you are spending too much.

Also I will tell you that with adult content your ads and keywords will be reviewed before they go live. Google didn't use to do this but they do now. I've been using AdWords for 4 years now and go through $30 in a few hours and I get treated like this. Also sometimes they are a little slow reviewing so if you ad hasn't started after a day then e-mail them or call them 1-866-2GOOGLE and ask why your ads aren't showing. Also forget changing your ads or adding keywords Friday-Sunday they won't be reviewed until Monday. And you won't get anyone to answer e-mail or the phone then either.

I tend to go for positions in the middle of the screenheight. My theory is that people always focus on the middle of a page (like when reading GFY, I always scroll replies until they reach the middle).

Just make sure your ad text stands out from the crowd when you go for a middle position (4-5).

I bid for the top positions. You get way more traffic.

+ A well written ad doesn't have to pay top dollar if the CTR is good enough ;)

By saying you have a $30 a month budget, then I assume you used their Budget Optimizer system (under Bidding on your Edit Campaign Settings screen). Thats where they limit you to your monthly budget, and spread clicks out.. Which means you're going to get like 1 click per day, then all the leftovers on the last day of the month. I'd change that to Manual and use a daily budget.
