PPC click fraud - research
I read in some thread (forgot which one now), about how someone could take out their competitor who uses PPC by setting up a web page that offers free porn to surfers if they clicked on the PPC link, etc.
a good way to harness "chinese traffic" ( LOL ). looking for examples where this is done in mainstream. feel free to email or icq me links (or respond here)... i won't be publishing this info and keeping confidential, just want to confirm with actual examples to be used illustratively (without disclosing the actual URL). The results from this research will be included in an article about click fraud for Project Black Book (http://www.projectblackbook.com) Project Black Book is a new monthly publication focused on mainstream affiliate marketing. I am one of the principals along with some other names you may know when you check out the About Us section. Thanks for any pointers you have. Fight the survey says!

A lot of PPC's have geo targeted traffic so you can pick and choose what country you want traffic from.
One of the other ones I use mostly does not let you choose geotargeted traffic but simply does not charge you for undesireable countries. |

i should have avoided the "chinese traffic" part.. what about a web page where someone already has done geo-ip lookup such that "good" traffic is then solicited for free porn by clicking on some ppc link (iframed or directed to a page where the PPC link was at, etc) (again, only interested in mainstream PPC programs). Fight the clarification!

Most PPC's will track referrer information, so if your competitor loses tons of cash on useless traffic you forced to his listings, all he needs to then do is complain to the PPC.
Most of the bigger PPC's will happily investigate the traffic and see it was coming from a dodgy source, or if all the traffic that came from referrer X "clicked" on listing #7 etc, there are a million ways to identify when someone is being screwed. Some PPC's will also only charge for uniques, rather than all those raw hits that you've fed to the listing. At any rate, if you're willing to go through the trouble of geo-filtering traffic that you can incentivize to ruin your competitors PPC campaign, you are close enough that you may as well just incentivize them to signup through your links ;) |
