Seems at least 1-2 planes crash every month.
Maybe its just me but several years ago I remember hearing about plane crashes every couple months but now it seems they crash more often.
Maybe the increase is due to increased number of flights per year - dunno.

Don't a lot of Taiwan Air planes go down or is it my imagination? Or is it they go to near China?

well,
china airlines are well known for the poor maintanance of their planes but in this area most crashes happen because of storms that are frequent around taiwan and hongkong

- A Boeing 747 of Taiwan's China Airlines carrying 225 people crashed into the sea off Taiwan during a flight to Hong Kong, officials said.

One body and the wreckage had been found, TVBS television reported.

China airlines owned the plane and are notorious for bad maintenance and pilots. A huge chunk of their pilots are ex China airforce and have little commercial training and often little commercial experience too. It seems many of them get rather too close to the mountains splattered over Taiwan and this wouldn't be the 1st to hit them. Fuck - I've flown several times on that route with China airlines, hopefully never again!
