Overture is getting ready to copy Google

I just got the heads up from my account rep at Yahoo search marketing that by the beginning of Q3, Overture is essentially going to be mirroring Google's interface and business model. Listings will be ranked based on CTR/maxbid (like Google), geo targetting by country/state/zipcode will be offered (like Google), instant approvals with an editorial review later on (like Google) and even the interface will be very similiar.

I really wish they wouldn't make these changes personally and would rather they didn't change a thing, but I imagine this would appeal to a lot of advertisers out there

WiredGuy: How much would you charge to teach someone how to effectively use Adwords??

For example.. someone tells you what product they want to promote, and you show them what you should do and how? (only if the keywords arn't competing with you of course)

ballpark figure?

WiredGuy, why don't you want those changes to be done ?

I think that CTR/maxbid system is more fair than maxbid only.

Anyone who's dealt with Overture knows how sadistic those nazi editors are. Even though they are brutal, it keeps a large amount of competition out from buying traffic. This new system will lower that barrier to entry. I also have a strong preference for highest bidder getting on top based on my business model. These changes do mean I have to change a lot of things on my end.

I see it now.

In other words: someone who's in there already - doesn't like it. And those are the good news for new advertisers.

so now i have to babysit my YSM ads like my google ones.. great. they're going to make a killing off of these proposed changes if they do occur, especially if their editors allow you to bid on a wider variety of kw's.

By the beginning of the 3rd quarter of the year. Private beta testing of their new interface (but not the new rankings) will be towards the end of the summer.

WG from my understanding of the call, when I brought up adult, they said that this won't change with the editors though. It may be 'faster' though because the mainstream Editors are moving to the adult side but essentially, the adult sites will still have to go through the 'manual' process.

If you do alot of mainstream stuff then yes, what you said applies.

At least, that's what I got from my discussion and question period.

I welcome the change. I get pissed off everytime I try to get an ad approved with yahoo. Now I might get 1 out of ten ads approved. And I don't understand whay they always want a user/password to the affiliate site I'm promoting. If they wanna watch porn, then they should sign up

The rep I spoke to mentioned that at first adult would require manual review, but I did get the impression that would be a temporary thing. I could be wrong though.

To late IMHO, PPC traffic is going to hell lately. Way too much fraud going on, I'm estimating I'm getting hit with 50+% fraud traffic on certain keywords. Given that and losses due to scumware it is really hard to make a profit as an affiliate these days.

"Yahoo has tipped its hand with the upcoming release of Project Panama -- an updated paid-search ad system. The New York Times reported the upgrade took nearly two years and cost tens of millions of dollars, and took the work of 28 teams of people in three locations. Yahoo has a lot of catching up to do, as Google searches bring in 40% more money than Yahoo searches, according to one analyst. What will advertisers get from Panama? Geographic targeting and automated analytics, showing how well an ad is performing and how many more clicks a campaign might generate with higher bids. Yahoo doesn't expect to gain revenues from the new system until 2007, with a launch expected in the third quarter of '06."

the yahoo interface sucks, about time they changed it. I gave up using them as soon as the denied one of my campaigns. I would imagine many webmasters have done the same and stuck with adwords.

According to what I heard they are still going to keep it divided into different markets like they have now, if that is true is seriously sucks.

Trying to beat google by copying them?

Now there's something that has no chance at all of succeeding.
Anyone think Overture can do the Google thing better than Google?
