Fuse blew and took my HD with it. :(
The fuse in the basement blew and it killed my HD. 40 GB of music I've spent years gathering. All gone. I had some memorable pictures that were important to me lost too Sad More pissed about that. I was able to get most of em, but lost a couple and I'm rather upset about it. I think it's kind of based on luck if I can still get them. I downloaded half of one before it stopped responding.
Windows will see it and recognize it fine until you select a bad file or something. Then the HD disapears. I can get some stuff, probably a lot of it, but it's a super slow and tedious process. When you pick the wrong file, you have to have windows look for the HD again. I also have to get files via firefox. Normal windows is super slow when trying to access it. Any idea how much those places which try to restore HD costs? I hear they are kind of expensive, but maybe the home owner insurance will cover it. I'd pay quite a bit if I could get this back. |

try hooking it up as a slave drive..use a good c drive as the master with O/S.
you might be surprised how much file info is still available on the damaged drive... |

Contact the power company and if the power spike was their fault they will generally pay for it.

The only time you really need those data recovery places is if the drive is making ticking/grinding noises, in which case they rip the drive apart, replace the bad parts, and grab what data they can.
When i brought a drive to a data recovery place they worked on it for free. They only charge if the data they recover is what you want and if it isnt then its free. If it is just bad sectors then you're better off copying the shit yourself. |

yeah always good to have a UPS ( universal power supply) beleive you americans call them APC's. They stop brownouts and voltage spikes. In regaurds of your hard drive and if you can use Dos use Dos prompts to transfer from one hard drive to another. As long as the hard drive is spinning and ur not in the bad sectors you will be fine
