The only time you really need those data recovery places is if the drive is making ticking/grinding noises, in which case they rip the drive apart, replace the bad parts, and grab what data they can.
When i brought a drive to a data recovery place they worked on it for free. They only charge if the data they recover is what you want and if it isnt then its free.
If it is just bad sectors then you're better off copying the shit yourself.
