Editing PHP code in Dreamweaver MX.

Is this considered an "ok" thing to do?

I am not a programmer in the slightest, but I can pull down PHP files, open them with DW and alter code appropriately.

For all intents and purposes, it seems to work. However, I wonder if coders look down on this or if DW manipulates the code adversly at times?

I know back in the day, editing code in DW sometimes led to errors down the road.

I am just wondering if Dreamweaver software is now a solid PHP editor.

I do all my PHP, ASP and SQL coding in Dreamweaver. Haven't had any issues with it.

I suppose it depends on how you use it. I've been using it lately for writing code and haven't experienced any problem yet, but I pretty much never use the wysiwyg editor except to preview the design.

You can edit PHP files in any text editor. PHP files are all text files in essence unless it's been encoded in which case it will most likely be binary and you won't be able to read it.

Believe it or not, a lot of PHP coders use dreamweaver.

I use Crimson Editor. Its free and there is no worry of it inflating the code. Its like wordpad but it color codes the syntax.

Awesome, wanted to make sure I was not the only one.

This is simple stuff. More or less, after programmers create the pages, I pull certain php files down to edit them.

Stop wordwrapping? Notepad is a plain text editor, there is no reason you should have any problems at all. Or are you just making that up to sound cool?

It's more than wordwrap. The rest I'll ignore because I'm tired.

Crimson Editor is a great freeware tool for PHP ... well any coding you need to do! Definitely makes it easier to write and read php code because of default syntax highlighting. I used to use it when I was working with PHP every now and then. Then I involved myself in a much bigger project so decided to get a php ide.

Select in DW that it should not break lines for you... Example: if a line is 200 characters long, it should span 2 or 3 lines of WORD WRAP and not be BROKEN by DW at the 80th character and span 2 or 3 lines of the file.

*sigh*

Everyones busting my balls today.
A quick google search will find all kinds of similiar issues.

Some editors (including Windows Notepad in win2000 and up) use the convention of marking Unicode files with 'FFFE' in the beginning. When opening the files that start like this, they assume they are unicode and shift to unicode mode, removing those two bytes from the beginning.

Unfortunately this convention is not a standard and breaks a great many things, including php - it makes php start the output when the file does not immediately start with <?php - and this is not easy to detect, because when you open this file, you see that it does, because your software removes those two bytes again.

It appears that this is a probable cause of your problems, the only way to fix this is to try another editor which does not follow this silly convention and check your index.php.

Dumbass.

I just did some php changes in NVU, but that fucked it all up. So I had to turn on my laptop where I have dreamweaver installed, and fix it there...

Dreamweaver ROCKS!
