The girlfriend / wife tax law. Is there a way around it?

Last Sunday I spent a decent chunk of money on some things I wanted. Today on my drive home, the girlfriend called me and told me I needed to pick something up for her.

She wants us to have a steam cleaner for the carpet. She told me that since I was able to spend a few hundred dollars on some stuff I wanted that I should have no problem spending another $300 on something "we" wanted.

I started thinking back in time as I was carrying that huge steam cleaner box out of Target on top of my shoulder and came to the conclusion that everytime I buy something for myself, I have to buy her something. And everytime I buy her something from Target, I can never get help out (I suppose that is beside the point).

It is like a tax. Like I should add on a percentage on top of my personal purchases.

So here I sit watching the NBA playoffs and there is this huge steam cleaner sitting in the middle of the room irritating me.

Taunting me.

Ahahaha.

You decide the I and she decides the we. Haha. Thats great.

I think a lot of couples have personal money and also joint money. You should be able to buy what you want without guilt. She should be able to buy what she wants without guilt. And then the joint money would be spent based on any couple things or household things, though ultimately she'll decide that to. :-)

My boyfriend begs me to buy stuff for him all the time... He wanted me to buy these headlights lights for him for his old Mercedes (really old) from Ebay, their vintage and hard to find, it was like $580... But I tried to negotiate it down so I ended up paying $380 and he paid the rest

I also bought him a $700 oscilloscope and $300 multimeter fior his home electronics lab he wants set up...

He buys me stuff too a lot, like treats me out for small things, but he's broke so I end up paying for a lot of stuff...

Not all girls are gold diggers. I make more than him so I have no reason to gold dig or ask him to ever buy anything for me.

We dont have a joint bank account but separate, we live together though.

Basically he has no money, so if we had a joint account it would just me giving him full access to my bank account which I am not ever gonna do.

She isn't a gold digger. She just doesn't kill me as long as I go to Target every now and then.

But even though I make more I'm very stingy, I like to live cheaply and watch every dollar and thus we always end up fighting about money...

A kept man is someone who doesnt work at all! I would never be with a man who refuses to work at all and not do anything at all. Doesnt matter if you make a lot or little, but at least work or do something productive.

Yup, its like going through a divorce but a little cheaper. Divorces take 50%, this way you're only on a 30% payment plan. The 50% plan you get to get rid of her though... so its up to you, 30% and enjoyment or 50% and freedom.

I never quite figured out why the sexual urge of men and women differ so
much. And I never have figured out the whole Venus and Mars thing. I have
never figured out why men think with their head and women with their heart.

FOR EXAMPLE: One evening last week, my girlfriend and I were getting into
bed.

Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says "I don't feel
like it, I just want you to hold me."

I said "WHAT??!! What was that?!"

So she says the words that every boyfriend on the planet dreads to hear...
"You're just not in touch with my emotional needs as a woman enough for me
to satisfy your physical needs as a man." She responded to my puzzled look
by saying, "Can't you just love me for who I am and not what I do for you in
the bedroom?"

Realizing that nothing was going to happen that night, I went to sleep.

The very next day I opted to take the day off of work to spend time with
her. We went out to a nice lunch and then went shopping at a big, big
unnamed department store. I walked around with her while she tried on
several different very expensive outfits. She couldn't decide which one to
take so I told her we'd just buy them all. She wanted new shoes to
compliment her new clothes, so I said lets get a pair for each outfit. We
went onto the jewelry department where she picked out a pair of diamond
earrings. Let me tell you...she was so excited. She must have thought I was
one wave short of a shipwreck. I started to think she was testing me because
she asked for a tennis bracelet when she doesn't even know how to play
tennis. I think I threw her for a loop when I said, "That's fine, honey."
She was almost nearing sexual satisfaction from all of the excitement.
Smiling with excited anticipation she finally said, "I think this is all
dear, let's go to the cashier."

I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, "No honey, I don't feel
like it."

Her face just went completely blank as her jaw dropped with a baffled
WHAT?"

I then said "honey! I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while. You're
just not in touch with my financial needs as a man enough for me to satisfy
your shopping needs as a woman." And just when she had this look like she
was going to kill me, I added, "Why can't you just love me for who I am and
not for the things I buy you?"

Apparently I'm not having sex tonight either

Thats how girls argue dude...

Read this carefully:

"I was able to spend a few hundred dollars on some stuff I wanted that I should have no problem spending another $300 on something "we" wanted."

WE? Whats this "We" thing, when its actually shit you most likely do not give a shit about? Substitute it with "I" because what she is essentially saying is not "WE" but "I".

If you bought somthing with your own money thats fine, on things that its all about "WE" then ya put up half and she puts up her's.

Cory, buy her shoes. Pick them out yourself or with my help. She'll love you for it and then some of your purchases will go undetected

if "we" wanted a fucking steam cleaner than why didnt "we" split the cost of it?

and if it was "her" that wanted it and not "we", then why did you pay a dime of it?

Some people here may have noticed that I have alot of toys... motorcycles, ATVs, arcade games, big bbq grill etc etc and thats because its "me" that makes the money and I decide most of the time what I want to buy, and just go get it. I dont have to buy a "we" thing just because I spent a few thousand on myself.

You gotta get that girl straightened out dude... quickly.

This reminds me of when I was married to my first ex-wife. I had spent $8k building and customing a 1949 H-D for a year or so. After it was completed she decided that it was only fair that I should now spend a few grand buying her what she liked . . . antique furniture.

I was able to negotiate it down from her original demand (pretty sure I got out for less than the 30% discussed above), but it still stung. I could have built another bike with that money.

Shoes. I like buying them and seeing them wear them. They seem to enjoy shopping for and buying them and even wearing them.

Ahhh.....perfect example for this thread too

She paid for my flights, hotel and even picked up/dropped me at the airport.

There is a right way and a wrong way to treat women... and buying them useless crap/giving in leads to disaster a lot of the time. When they're picking up the tabs like this and are sucking up to see you again you know they're under the magic spell

Noice.

Proud of you son.

And you still owe me $1000.

Cory, after reading this and then reading about your phone conversation (or IM conversation) with her in your "day in the life" thread I've come to the conclusion that you need a different girlfriend.

Actually she never mentioned cleaning with it, she only told him to buy it.

I have a funny feeling she's not going to be the one pushing it around the carpet.

"If you can spend 4 hours watching YOUR playoff game you can spend 2 hours cleaning OUR carpet.
