What some people fail to realise however is the whole ME is a cesspool of extremism that is constantly building. IMO a more appropriate statement would be that religion was the tool used to 'form and shape' the above, not the cause of it.

Someone had to dream up these results and a means to obtain them. Religion was the easiest way to influence large masses of ignorant people way back when. It can still be somewhat effective today though government has superceded much of it's former reign (at least in more advanced cultures).
