No need to build your own. Here are some sites powered by MPA3 and some of our other products, all tangible goods:

and I can name a bunch others too. MPA3 is currently integrated with 5-6 gateways using your own merchant account and we have our own shopping cart fully integrated into MPA3 of course, as well as more to add to it. Ill tell you more later on. Set up a tee time with Ycaza.

Personally, I would stick with his suggestion. It would be the fastest and probably cheaper way to go. Rebuilding is very time consuming and you pay more having your guy build it.
