doubtful... the majority of customers and webmasters are still in the US, why would a sponsor pay the difference?

Because they can make more by billing in CAD, and if they do that they will pay out in CAD

Seriously, there is strong pressure to keep pushing the US dollar down, largely because of the trade defecit. The US government needs the dollar money supply to keep inflating because it is the only way they will be able to pay off social security. The one thing we have in our favor is oil prices. A lower dollar will only make oil that much more expensive.

Natural resources (ie, oil) have been driving the Canadian side of the equation... only by a small margin though.

The main thing is an unprecedented devaluation of the US dollar by the US government. If I was a currency speculator I think I'd be buying Iraqi dinar's before buying the US dollar.

Of course you are right about Iraq though ;)

The Canadian government has political reasons to temporarily drive the rate down via the Bank of Canada (ie, "the Canadian economy is strong, look at the exchange rate").

I see no clear rational as to why the Canadian economy could be considered any stronger than it was 5 years ago save for increased prices of natural resources. But that really can't account for a 40-50% slide over 4 years. Historically it has taken 15-20 years for these kind of big changes to take place.
