:mad Question for those of you who own your own business.

god damnit... can anyone tell me why friends and folks think that my business is my fuckin hobby!??!?! I'm tired of my girlfriend, my friends, and others wondering why I can't go out or do something and when I tell them I've got to work they somehow think it means I don't want to hang out, but would rather work on my "hobby" ... gawd it's driving me nuts!

solution ( if you haven't already done so) Get an office and work semi-normal hours. Had same problem, office solved it for the most part.

I have the same problem man. My grandma used to flip out, saying I work too much, blah, blah, blah. Even though I worked less than half as much as my friends and made 10 times more.

Simply ask them about their 'hobbies' (main job reference) and keep it up til it dawns of them. Retired ppl? Ask them when they retired from their hobby... Even the densest people usually catch on sooner or later.

Know how you feel. Letting go and/or delegating can be a tough one sometimes.

Well, since my friends know I earn my ENTIRE income, which is more than many of them make, from my business, that really doesn't come up very much.

I would say if your business is making you money and you can pay your bills, well then you got employment...Just because you don't work for someon else, does not mean you don't have a job.

If they continue to say your job is your hobby, whip out your wallet and match their weekly pay with yours and hopefully they will finanally see the light.

Here's a thought....and just my $1.48 worth....the next time they bitch, moan, and groan, about your so-called "hobby", why not ask them if they intend on reimbursing you the amount of cash that your "hobby" would be putting in your bank account?? And, just to drive the point home a bit more, give them some visual proof as to the amount that you'd make in that span of time...bets are, you'll hear alot less bitching about it!

The best job you could ever have is also your hobby. Someone once said to me when you find a job you really enjoy then you will never work again a day in your life.

4 months 1 day since I left my "real" job, working 15 hours a day now, and I love every second of it. (and my past job was as a unix admin for EDS working on palm.com, mitsuibishi.com and maxtor.com!). Wouldn't go back even if they asked nicely...

Shameless plug: {cough} {cough} I sure could use a few free host {cough} customers on one of my {cough} free host servers. {cough} {cough} http://snarfs.com {cough}

Most of my buddies are quite jealous of my success and my lifestyle. They think I work 2 days a week and sleep until 4:00pm everyday. LOL! Well the 4:00pm thing may be true but I do work like 12 hours a day!

It was nice paying off my credit card today. It would have taken me months to pay it off at my old job.

Cool guys, thanks for your points that you brought up..

Just so those of you who suggested the normal business hours thing... I can't really do that .. b/c I also have a full time day job at sextracker, which means any time I spend on my sites usually occurs between 8:00pm and 4:00am ... and on weekends from 10:00am 'till about midnight...

sounds to me like you spend to much time working, TaDow. I mean, 8 hours a day is good enough for me. Buy the 6th our, I start getting board, and by the 8th, im mere seconds away from throwing the computer off my desk.

My uncle has a bad habit of working to much, and his wife kicked him out because of it. Kind of shitty, but what did he expect? Sure, its nice to have LOTS of money to flash around, but life isnt all about work, its also about fun, and friends.

it's true life isn't all about money ... I really do have a good time doing what I do .. and I really do leave a couple nights a week to party. I also make sure to spend at least a bit of time with my girl, she runs a busy life too getting ready for college graduation and all that shit, plus a job, plus a billion extra curricular activities..

I want to retire at a nice young age tho so I can enjoy life to its fullest, and to me that means busting my ass for the best (most energetic) 10 years of it so I can be rewarded later on...

Me and my business partner have been in the adult game for well over 4 years and are pretty much set for anythign we wanna do, all of our friends always ask for jobs and wanna know what they can do to make the same kinda money we make and my responce is simple "work all night sleep all day and for god sake build yourself a good computer not that 1996 HP mom and dad bought you"

Now about this whole friends and wanting to chill and you wanna work just say "hey when you find something you like to do let me know so i can ask you to go chill and not do what you like to do "

Ill tell ya man I feel everything you guys are sayin.

One thing I hate more than anything is the girl friend/fuck buddy.
They think cause most of the time your at home if you have an office set up at your house they want you to stop work to spend time with them. (But if you do that and dont bring in the $$ to take them out they get pissed) FUCK THAT!!!

We Adult Webmasters work harder than most thats why we bring in the chedder!!

This is a great thread. I get the same shit as you guys.... well, it's not so much me getting crap for not hanging out with my friends, since I blow off work for that all the time (I don't have the discipline to work 18 hours a day, I guees), but I really hate it when people refer to me as UNemployed, when in reality I am SELF employed. Big difference. I assume it's just some sort of jealousy of my life style.

Why do so many people think you need to work for someone else? I quit my day job about 9 months ago, and this has been a GREAT 9 months, let me tell you.

BTW, snarfs - I'm an ex-EDSer too (a few jobs ago). Damn my life is a lot better now...
