My grandma died this past weekend and I was cleaning out her house.

I found an old collection of U.S. sports cards from my grand father's collection. He passed on 6 years ago. He has some pretty old cards here and I'm wondering if they're worth any money. I've heard the name Honus Wagner on the news and there are two of his cards here. The oldest one is dated 1889. They seem to be in pretty good condition.

Are they worth anything or should I just sell them to my local comic book shop?

you should search eBay for similar cards to see what's up. If they're in good shape they could be worth quite a bit.

There are 4 boxes (moving-style boxes) full of sports cards here. $5 x ? = Lots of money.

Sorry to hear about your Grandma.

Take the cards to an I Sold It shop .. its an Ebay store that sells for you. They'll get you what they can.

Then take the money and use it to frame up some pictures for the family.

send them to me, i'll let you know what they are worth. most shops will rip you off hardcore if you go in with a collection and say you have no clue who is who and how much they are worth.

go to barnes and noble. they have collectors books with values of baseball cards. if you dont you are going to get fucked. i used to collect and sell cards when i was young. believe it or not you could have 100's of thousands of dollars worth of cards in those 4 boxes.. maybe you find a really rare card or two worth 50k + each....

It really depends on the cards.
For a collection that old, chances are you could have some cards in the mix worth 10's of thousands, or not.

DONT TOUCH THEM WITH YOUR BARE FINGERS!

Go get some thin latex gloves and go through them.

I would create a record of every card in the collection, then take the list to a fine auction house, if they see anything of value, they will have you bring the collection in for appraisal.

A wild guess is that on average, the cards are probably worth FAR more than $5 each. You could have individual cards in there that are worth thousands or more, depending on their condition.

There are guides published with the current values being paid for various cards. If you take a couple hours, that will give you a rough idea of what you're dealing with.

I wouldn't trust either the ebay auction places or a card collection shop; if they know what you have and you don't, it would be easy for them to just lift a card or two that are worth thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, and you'd never know.

What you might do is pay a couple of known collectors to come and evaluate the collection for you, at your house, making it clear you don't want to sell any of the cards, but you're just looking for an insurance valuation. Then, if the info from the two different (unrelated) collectors is similar, you'll have a good idea of what the collection is worth.

If you have the time and energy to put into it, the collection could potentially be worth a VERY large amount of money.

That wasn't Wagner's only card.

It really depends on the condition of these cards. As people have said, look them up on eBay. Then I would send the more valuable cards in to be graded because graded cards bing more money. This isn't like the old days when cards had basic grades. Pros grade them now using magnifying glasses and then seal them in a tamper-proof case with their grade.

Post some photos here if you need help identifying the brands and years.

Sincere condolences on the passing of your grandma.

Best of luck with finding out the value of those cards. Might be a helluva inheritance.

1909 T206 White Border #366
Honus Wagner, 2B Pittsburgh Pirates
$250,000-$400,000

the card that started it all. There are around 100 believed to be still in existence and only ten in decent condition. Supposedly Wagner, a Hall of Fame second baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates, objected to cigarette smoking and demanded his cards be pulled from production. The last recorded auction price for a Wagner T206 was $1.1 million in 2000.

it is about 99.99% fake but there are two instances i can remember off hand
from my days working in a beseball card shop.... a kid dug one up in a coffee can in his back yard, it was pretty trashed but they still got like 100k....another instance similar to this post,...some guy's neighbor died and he went to help the old widow clean out her attic and found one, if memory serves right she let him keep it...............

No there isn't. There are reportedly less than 10 Honus Wagners out there, which is the reason it is considered the "mona lisa" of baseball cards and the most sought after card in history. This kid didn't find one in his grandmas attic.
