Certainly no-one is yet forcing anyone to do anything. But if the xxx TLD is created, it can only be a matter of time before there are attempts to change that. There will always be people trying to score political brownie points attacking (online) porn and to the public at large, if we have our own TLD, what could seem more reasonable than that be the only TLD adult sites should use?

The ACLU and others might get energized over issues of censorship in the face of such moves, but unless we are absolutely certain they will win every time, anyone who has successfully branded his sites, to ensure the continuity of his business, really has no choice but to buy the xxx versions of his domains. Which means paying (reportedly) $60 per year per domain for domains which will be virtually worthless unless and until we are eventually segregated.

Most webmasters will just buy other countries extensions cheaper.

The logic of that suggestion escapes me.

If we ever are herded on to our own TLD, that option may not exist. But even if it does, for the sake of a few dollars you would seriously try to establish traffic flow to a domain where no-one expects to find porn, rather than use an extension dedicated to porn?

Which anyway is not the point. Let's say you have been building mybigporn.com for 15 years when the axe falls. You are no longer allowed to use .com and you discover that someone else has owned mybigporn.xxx for 5 years. Basically you would be screwed.

I actually agree with those who say that segregration will never happen. Where we part company is that I'm saying no-one can guarantee that and therefore we shall have to buy mirrors of our important domains, because too much is at stake if we prove to be wrong.

That has to be the most naive comment anyone has made on this issue.

So for the sake of a few dollars, you would recommend that someone who has spent years building a brand does not protect himself against the possibility, however remote, that one day he might actually need his xxx TLD?

That is beyond naive. It is ludicrous.

Buying xxx domains will be like insurance. The crazy thing is that the creation of the TLD is the only reason we need to take out insurance in the first place!
